You may be rolling the dice if you fly Philippine Airlines, or any other Philippine carrier. The FAA has downgraded the safety rating for Philippine carriers because of the Philippine government's failure to provide adequate oversight. Check out this article:

Here's a more detailed news story. http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iaFaBlc...eZkeZwD8U6CM7G0

I've flown both Phil Air and Northwest and I really liked Phil Air better. This downgrade is directed at the Philippine government not the airline IMO

Philippine Airlines President Jaime Bautista said the downgrade dampened hopes of increasing its 33 flights a week to the U.S. Also affected will be the delivery of six new Boeing 777-300ER airplanes ordered by the airline, he said.

He said the FAA rating does not reflect on the airline itself, but is an assessment of the government's compliance with international safety rules.

I don't think it's because of PAL. The Philippine government has not being doing things properly as far as inspecting the airlines....that's why their safety rating dropped. If you read the entire story, you'll find out that PAL maintainence is being done by Luftthasa.

Maybe PAL is "doing the right thing" and maintaining the planes properly, and maybe not. The reason we need government oversight of airline safety is because of the temptation to cut corners. Obviously PAL doesn't want their planes to crash, but how do we know that they have solid management? In the US, the TSB provides strict oversight to keep airlines in check. If the Philippine government fails to keep up its end, then we are essentially left with trusting the airline.

Lack of proper oversight does not automatically mean PAL (or other filipino carriers) in "unsafe," but it certainly adds an additional element of risk.

I would never fly this Airline 'PAL' after those Terrorist blow up a plane over the sea a few years back in Philippines. Even if it has happen also with Korean Air before that was the Russian out of a mistack by their Military. In the other hand, PAL let those terrorist board and plant a bomb on the jet...that is not the type of Airline you would ever find me flying. Just like I couldn't fly American Airline...well that is my personal opinion!!

I think the US Gov is in need of an attitude adjustment, their track record isnt 100% as well. I flew from the Dallas/Fort Worth area coming and going to the Philippines on AA awhile back and AA was delayed coming and going and one of the reasons was that the floor in the plane was unstable/loose (oops) And, coming back the flight I was suppose to catch left 15 minutes 'before' it was scheduled to depart! Leaving over 30 passengers in Dallas. They had to find a pilot and bring him a plane to get us back home (an hour & a half late).

The pilots and airport workers, security here are overworked and under paid....sound familiar? Its no different...

I trust PAL when it comes to flying. Before coming here Ive been to several countries and I've always flown thru PAL and even within the Philippines. In fact, even if my now husband resides in florida I insisted that my POE was in San Francisco because PAL has a straight flight from Manila to SanFran and he just flew from Florida to San Fran to meet me there.

About being late, oh well, its not only PAL, in fact here in the USA, airlines are now being fined if they are late. So being late is part of the business although not all the time. Its not only PAL that is late, all airlines experience being late . To add, when it comes to safety PAL has a low rate of accidents and airline crashes.

I am very satisfied with PAL.

Just my opinion.

I think your fooling yourself to think that air travel is especially safe in the US.

Thousands of tons of cargo and pieces of mail go on planes in the US everyday without any inspection at all.

The security measures in place are mostly just a show to keep the average flier THINKING they are safe.

Lets face it, threats in recent years have not been slowed down much by it.

I have flown PAL too and had a good experience.

I did notice a little less security and control on the flight than I am used to.

There was no secondary ID check as we boarded the plane.

When the plane arrived in Manila, we were still a long ways from the gate waiting for a parking space, as the plane stopped everyone stood up and began to get their bags out of the overheads, THE PLANE was not parked yet!
