STROKE

Stroke is no laughing matter. Both my grandparents on my mum's side were carried off by strokes - pretty much ended their marriage right there as afterwards neither could cope with the others resulting disabilities. My grandmother lost some memory, but was otherwise ok, while my grandfather got the full left-side paralysis. They ended their lives in separate, private care homes - pretty grim stuff. Especially my granddad who retained his memory and personality but was stuck in a ruined body that started to rot on him. Ended up having his toes then his left leg amputated. After that he decided he didn't have much else to live for so stopped eating and basically starved himself to death. Pretty awful and ignominious way to check out - better to snuff it right then and there than linger around like that.

Also had a family friend of ours (in his early 50's) had a stroke about a year ago - luckily for him it was mild, with no lasting ill-effects, but it scared the ####### out of him. Unfortunately for him, he never been sick in his life and had never been hospitalised since birth basically - so he was a bit chagrined to discover that as a result of this minor stroke, his monthly health insurance premiums went through the roof. Disclosing on insurance forms that you've had to take plavix or some other cholesterol/blood pressure lowering medication.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

That must have been scary. Glad she is doing better. Did her doctor put her on a diet, exercise or HBP medicine?

She is 93 :) They did not as much as put her on aspirin. I am currently digging into the emailed CAT scan results and

then will discuss with her doctor how to adjust or change her meds. She still insists on living by herself and no 12 horses

can change her mind. She did not want to move here from Germany. She is rooted like an oak tree and still a very feisty

lady :D She said she will not consider a nursing home as she will not be " with all those old people ! "

There is no family to care for her , I have nursing/ caregivers drop in twice a day. :( I miss her !

Wow Omoba, seems like she is a very special person and strong minded. Hope everything is alright and feel for your concern about your mom. (F)

10Yr GC arrived 07/02/09 - Naturalization is next

The drama begins - again!

And now the drama ends - they took the Green card . . .

My grandad was a stroke victim. Left sided, thus affecting his speech. He found it so frustrating, not being able to communicate.

Being a trained nurse I can spot the signs, very good advice brnidokiegurl

A stroke can have many causes and can happen to anyone at any age and knowing the warning signs is vital--Thanks to whomever got this thread reinstated; and trimmed of the inappropriatly placed sexual innuendo.

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

Before my gran died she had TIAs that always affected her right side, leaving her unable to use her right hand/arm and her face would have the tell-tale signs of stroke droopiness. She'd recover within a few hours, but every time she had one I felt that another little piece of her was disappearing... she died of a stroke when she was 86. I miss her still... :( She hated doctors and medicine and I think she would have lived longer if she'd taken better care of herself and by that I mean taken medication or told us when she didn't feel well.

I used to work with a fella who was 23. He had had a stroke when he was 18. He had lost the use of his right side pretty much - although he could walk, albeit with a heavy limp. He had to learn to write with his left hand and function on a daily basis with pretty much only half of a working body.

I'll fully admit that he didn't cope very well and the last that I knew he had descended into drink and drugs. :(

Strokes are no laughing matter. My kids 19 yo babysitter had a pretty bad stroke right before Christmas. Only 19! She was in perfect health and now she has to walk with a walker and she speaks with a bad slur. Her doctors say the damage is probably permenant too. Very sad.
