Are those the only two options - death or ice cream?

Who said death?

I thought we were talking about the death penalty.

But ok, so you replied to his comment on torture. Are the only two options torture or ice cream? You're presenting a false dilemma.

Going a little further its a false debate - seeing as the DP does not in any way, shape or form - apply to this case.

Hey if people find it somehow therapeutic to shake their fists at criminals and make comments along about death and torture, I can sort of understand that; though there is some reason (I think) to be a little concerned about how serious these opinions really are. On the whole I'd say probably not very - in fact the idea that someone would take such a thing seriously to heart to the point that they honestly want to take vicarious revenge for someone else's crime - well those are folks to worry about. On the plus side - they're probably in the minority. Those who aren't probably don't need an excuse...

expressed concern and fear that so many of my fellow citizens believe in the death penalty, specifically a painful death.

Why does that scare you? Are you planning to commit a crime that may warrent the DP?

i still have a difficult time equating dp to mean death penalty and not double penetration

No but his/her reply was to my comment on "eye for an eye"

We don't know all the specifics to the case and therefore, can't really make any type of judgement calls as to what his or their exact punishments should be. That is a matter that will be up to the courts there. However, if it was done by a sane person then I don't see anything wrong with a little pain in return for what they put that poor girl through.

Anyway, it makes you feel better, when you hear horrible news like this, to vent a little and wish bad things on the criminal. It doesn't, however, make sense to me to automatically turn the criminal into a victim and start passing out lollipops for their crimes and it SCARES me that so many people out there seem to want to do this and downplay criminal activity ;)

I guess I don't see where anyone suggested anything like that.

not splitting hairs. anyone in this thread that has voiced an opinion in support of the death penalty may feel you've insulted them and their views. and i for one do feel insulted for having a different viewpoint than yours.

now given this statement: "Anyone who takes pleasure in the suffering of another, regardless of circumstances, is disturbed." - there must be a lotta people in florida you should be worried about then as quite a few were happy about ted bundy being megatazered.

and i was happy to see tookie williams get his just desserts for what he did (hate crimes). but i know, i and so many others must be dysfunctional because we believe the death penalty is effective and a suitable punishment for mad dogs.

I'd like to conclude this exchange by apologizing if you (and others) were insulted, it was not my intent.

What happened to this poor girl is horrifying, but torturing her assailant(s), as some of you have suggested, is not the solution.

You're right, let's give him an ice cream cone

Yes, that was going to be my suggestion.

You too? ;)

Are those the only two options - death or ice cream?

It's not death or ice cream, it's cake or death! Duh.

More of the 'if you aren't with us, you're against us' twaddle.

There is absolutely no suggestion that those who think an 'eye for an eye' is an archaic, inhumane, inappropriate and ineffective punishment/solution somehow want to brush these kind of horrific crimes under the carpet. I have seen no evidence for that. I have seen no evidence of anyone wanting to soften the heinous nature of these type of crimes, nor have I seen anyone wish to downplay it, make excuses for the perpetrators nor somehow wish them to be absolved from their culpability or allowed not to face the consequences of their actions.

However, there are people who like to make out that prison is a 'soft option' for criminals and that this is why criminals continue to perpetrate horrible crimes; that they laugh in the face of the punishments currently meted out. The suggestion is that if society started to 'toughen up' and mete out revenge punishments, crime would somehow magically disappear. Well, as has been said before, countries that have such draconian punishment systems are not free from crime and are constantly on the receiving end of criticism for their abuse of human rights. They are not places that most people would like to live in. There are no 'neat and simple' solutions. However, if we dared take a closer at the "why" of crime, not some knee jerk personal reaction to crime stories in the news, society just might be able to move forward.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Which would possibly be an appropriate punishment for this crime

 Horrible, but very funny....

But in reality, death penalty (dp) or not... these boys need to be punished. I just don't know if there is anything that can show them the severity of their crime as it takes a certain type of person to do something like this to another human being

يَايُّهَا الَّذِينَ ءامَنُوا اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَوةِ اِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّبِرِينَ

From what I've seen: prison, at least in the US, is far from a soft option. But still... the myth continues.
