I got married in Brooklyn, and I got immediately after wedding marriage certificate. When I was getting ready AOS I just copy marriage certificate and sent with all AOS papers. Now I got interview letter and I have to take with me certified copy of marriage certificate. Should I just copy my marriage certificate and bring it or I need to go to the clerk office to get certified copies. What is the difference?

Make a plain copy to give the interviewing officer if they want to add it to the file, and also bring the original certificate for them to see to confirm the copy you sent in with the petition is a true copy.

When we got married, we immediately received a copy of the marriage certificate from the officiant who performed our wedding... This was not the "official" or "certified" copy.

In MN, the officiant is required to send a copy of the documents to the county clerk who "certifies" the marriage and recorded it in the vital statistics record. The county clerk then sent to us the "official" certificate.

YMMV

That is true, what you sent USCIS may not be the recored certificate, so yes you may have to get one from your county office.

I think it is more of an added burden of proof. We always mail copies. Anytime you seem to see someone in person, you need to bring an original.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

So what you are saying is we have to go back to the Clerks office and get another copy. Oh well one more trip to the city hall.

Maybe. There is a distinction made here. The certificate delivered to you on you wedding day and the certificate that indicates the marriage was recorded with the County and State are not the same thing. You need one with the stamp from a government entity.

That is what I don't understand.

As I said in my first post bring the official government issued marriage cert, and a plain photo copy of it for interviewing officer to keep. They will not keep the original, and the copy does not need to be certified copy per USCIS policy.

USCIS no longer routinely requires submission of original documents or "certified copies." Instead, ordinary legible photocopies of such documents (including naturalization certificates and alien registration cards) will be acceptable for initial filing and approval of petitions and applications.

At the discretion of the officer, original documents may still be required in individual cases. Please be advised that USCIS no longer returns original documents submitted with the exception of Certificates of Naturalization, Forms I-551, Permanent Resident Card, Forms I-94, Arrival/Departure Document, valid passports, or those specifically requested by the officer. Such documents will be returned when they are no longer needed.

The original certificate is likely on file in the county where the marriage was performed. You may have been sent a certified copy after the marriage licence was filed, but otherwise you can request certified copies from county offices. In Minnesota a certified copy is just a photocopy with an official stamp on it.

You can get as many certified copies as you need, and you do need to send one with AOS.

After we were married and it was recorded at the courthouse, we went in person to the courthouse and paid for 3 certified copies of our marraige certificate. Each one was stamped by the clerk.
