is it time to go home yet?

i'm soooo sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy and just found out "we" have a science project due tomorrow. :crying::crying:

*Hands out toilet paper tubes, egg cartons, and Elmer's glue* Get to work everyone. WE have a science project to finish!

I love science projects! Every time my son has a project I'm always wanting to help him out, but he thinks he's too big for that. I'm always in the background...."hey....why don't you try this?" Usually by the time he's done he's implemented a few of my idea. :star:

It's nice to see that you like to help your children out with those things and not complain about it! :)

Don't you just LOVE those projects that are suddenly 'due tomorrow'?? :o I made my son stay up late and get up early to get his done one time. He didn't neglect to tell about future projects at the time they were assigned so we could plan them out. Looks like Yassmine's project will be a group effort...get working every one!

I think teachers need to start giving projects that students can complete on their own. How much have you learned if your mom or dad has practically done the whole thing for you?

I think it's great when parents and kids spend time together, especially in the context of learning, but not doing school work that is supposed to be representative of the child's work.

Anyway, those are my 2 cents that nobody asked for.

I also think parents should spend quality time with their kids BUT the schools have gone overboard (imho)! They have sheet after sheet after sheet that I have to initial and/or sign every night showing that I've looked over his homework, watched him read for 30 minutes, worked on math for another 30 minutes, talked about his day for 30 minutes, checked his "daily score" and talked about it if it wasn't 100 or more... heck, we don't have time to do all that. We get home around 645, he does his homework, eats, and by that time it is 8pm or later..well he goes to bed at 830 (or he can't wake up the next day) so does that leave 1.5 hours to do what the school wants us to do? NO AAAANNNNDDDDD it also leaves no family time spent away from doing schoolwork :crying: That really makes me angry sometimes!!!

I somewhat agree with you but are you taking into consideration that not all kids are on the same level? I'm sure there are some kids that can whiz through projects and others that may need extra help. What I really think is bad is when the parent takes over the whole project or homework assignment.

VJ Hours - I am available M-F from 10am - 5pm PST. I will occasionaly put in some OT for a fairly good poo slinging thread or a donut.

I think that homework/projects should be designed so that a child at any level can complete it. If you have a classroom with varying levels, then vary the requirements. I just don't think that kids who don't have their parents around to help them all the time should be at a disadvantage when it comes to learning. If a parent wants to help (help, not take over) then that's great, but that should not be necessary for a child to successfully complete the assignment.

I agree with you but I just don't see how they can vary the requirements. I know that in California where I live, the schools are very overcrowded and there is a huge lack in budget which would make that a very difficult but not impossible goal to reach. However I think alot of public school teachers in our area are not as motivated due to all the budget cuts. IMO I think they deserve to be paid more than an engineer.

I'd be interested to know how this varies from state to state.

Yeah, I am talking a perfect-world scenario. I'm a big proponent of salary increases for teachers - to motivate, as well as attract more qualified people to the profession. As it is now, the people who could teach our children the best often pursue other career paths because of the money.
