A new analysis of the genetics of syphilis provides support for the theory that the disease hitched a ride with Christopher Columbus from the New World back to the Old World.

But in a new wrinkle, the research suggests the disease may not have been transmitted through sex until it adapted to the environment in Europe.

"It evolved this whole new transmission mode, and it didn't take very many genetic changes," said study lead author Kristin Harper, a graduate student at Emory University. "What this tells us is that new transmission modes may evolve pretty rapidly. This is important to us today, because we're worried about things like avian influenza going from human to human."

I read somewhere that Ancient Greeks suffered from syphilis as well. Its quite possible that the New World harbored one particular strain of Treponema that became easily spread in post-medieval Europe...

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

bird flu!!! run for the hills!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Thanks to airplanes no one is isolated any more. Or is this more of your 'illegal immigration is good' rhetoric?

Dunno - did you hear the story about the indigenous South Americans having perfect teeth until they came in contact with European settlers?

That and the whole mess of colonialization that followed in North and South America and Africa. Plenty of human misery.

People and other living beings migrate all the time. This is all part of the cirle of life *breaks into song*

Though when the birds fly south for the winter they don't rape and pillage as they go ;)

Maybe not, but if they take disease with them, they can have the same impact on their host environments. Same is true for many other animals, water life, insects, etc.

Habitats get destroyed and from the destruction arises a new order. Such is the circle of life *breaks into song again*
