Actually I have no problem with the big box pet stores in terms of pet sales, since for cats and dogs it's all rescue animals from shelters and foster groups. I wish they didn't sell birds and rodents, but they're on the right track. There is no reason to give your average independent store the benefit of the doubt when the majority have awful track records. It just wouldn't be logical.

stereotype much alex? you wish to include every independent pet store in that sweeping generalization? you're right about something......"It just wouldn't be logical."

Charles, giving them the benefit of the doubt is also a generalization. But since MOST of them are irresponsible these days (and come to NYC and you'll see what I'm talking about... it's like nothing I saw in the Midwest, unfortunately) it's better to approach the store with skepticism rather than optimism. In the end, it's always better to rescue an animal than buy in a pet store, but you're right that some stores are much better than others.

while i too dislike chain pet stores (petsmart etc) i do give the benefit of the doubt to the independent stores.

Charles- you are contradicting yourself. You say owners breed yet your dad got more $$ elsewhere. So where DO those puppies come from?

Also- Petsmart does rescue adoptions. So hate the chain or not, they are not selling from puppy mills! They save dogs!!!

read a bit more carefully will you?

um i'm pointing out what i've seen. make what you wish outta it ;)

back at ya Charles.

Your said your dad made money as a breeder than selling those pups in the shop. So he got pups from owners/breeders/mills.

You said chain shops suck yet they are saving lives. Not hard to read the good in that, is there?

you conglomerate all of them togther......no, not from mills. other breeders. i'm sure you've heard of trading?

i've seen one chain store mentioned by alex. my experience was with petsmart in san antonio about a decade ago.

giving them the benefit of the doubt is a lot better than being found guilty without a trial isn't it?

i do avoid mall pet stores like the plague btw.

well my god, a lot can happen in 10 years, no???????? FFS Charles!!!

 A good breeder sells directly to the client. I know you want to defend what your father does, Charles, but it really is a thing of the past. The big box stores (PetCo, PetSmart, etc.) don't even sell dogs and cats in them anymore; they have rescue organizations come in for certain specific times each week. Soon, the model will shift so pet stores no longer sell rodents and birds, etc., as well.

Unless you plan to train the dog not to bark, don't put a dog in an apartment. We have lived next to neighbors (in an apartment) that had a small dog, and we were constantly having to listen to this dogs yapping. It certainly did not make for a pleasant living environment. We still have that problem with a house, but our options are much more limited as far as noise complaints.

Best comment in this thread. I live in a pet friendly building and I DO enjoy seeing and meeting the pooches in the building, but I gotta say, I've also lived next to small yappy dogs and it's been a nightmare. I know I'll NEVER have that kind of dog. Give me a nice big dog that's NOT hyperactive but when barks, makes a nice big WOOF that people pay attention to...hehehe. I know not ALL small dogs are yappy and not ALL big dogs aren't, but it seems to go that way most often. I believe the weight limit on dogs in our building is 45 pounds. There are some larger ones in my building

I agree good Sister! Nothing more annoying than a neighbour's yapping dog.

Yeah, we have a neighbor that has two small dogs (I know one is a Yorkie, the other is some kind of terrier) and they bark CONSTANTLY! The yorkie is tiny, so his bark isn't that noticeable, but the other dog barks loudly and barks every single second that his little mutt self is outside (I normally love dogs, but this dog I despise). We have talked to the neighbors nicely multiple times, and they've stopped letting him out so much, but act ignorant as to how they can fix the problem. Any knowledgable person knows that you can train a dog, either through a bark collar, other training, or get one of those outdoor things that puts out a noise when the dog barks in order to deter the dog. We would buy one, but it is too expensive and wouldn't work logistically from our yard. Our houses are very close, so the dog is about 5 feet from my head (our bed is by a window) and I can hear him quite clearly through our single paned window and he can hear me when I yell at him to hush. We are renting the house, so we can't really do much as far as making our house more sound proof. Anyways, the bottom line is, anytime you get an animal that makes noise, you need to take the steps to insure you aren't disturbing anyone else!

You will find that PetSmart gets their cats from the local humane society in their area. These cats are at these stores on a rotating basis, i.e. they are there for 2/3 days at a time (unless adopted, obviously) and then they return to the shelter.

Average adoption rate in the MidWest is $80.
