So what should be done with the pet shop puppies, bullet to the head? I'm not defending the pet shops, but wondering why take it out on the poor pups?

I'd like to see legislation outlawing puppy mills. That would be a start. There are plenty of professional dog breeders out there who truly care about their dogs...and now with the internet, they can advertise their dogs across the country. For the price you'd pay at a pet store, you can find a purebred puppy from a breeder who's in the business because they love dogs first and foremost.

I agree with you about the legislation. I do think it is awfully nice though when a dog is saved from the gas chamber when someone rescues one from the local dog shelter / pound.

That's certainly better, although I have a serious issue with breeders, too. All the purebreds have some sort of health problems and there are already so many unloved dogs in the world, why purposely make lots more? Dogs take care of that on their own.

well the pet store i went to promises they do not use puppy mills. who knows how they can prove that. but you can't exactly trust breeders either.

we just really like to go and look at them at the pet store. we probably go once a week or so just to get a smile on our faces! but today for some reason we saw one we really liked and wanted to get it. we most likely won't because of the apartment issue...but i really wanted him! :)

Another reason why we don't want a dog yet is because if we ever want to go away for a weekend or a long trip it's a pain to find a place or a person to watch the dog.

Good point. As cute as he was, I think I'll nix that idea! hehe

Whatever anyone does, they should NEVER buy a puppy in a pet store. It's the cruelest most ignorant thing you can do.

That is one thing I don't understand...why pet stores can still sell puppies after all the information that's out there, you'd think most people are aware of puppy mills and wouldn't dare to spend $1,000 on a puppy without knowing where it came from, etc. Who buys these puppies?

I know. It INFURIATES me that anyone would think of buying a pet store puppy. Something is wrong with you if you consider that, honestly. You obviously don't care about animals, so you shouldn't get one for a pet.

just as it infuriates me to see someone lump all pet stores together. the best way to tell if a pet store is good is trust your nose. if you can smell piss and chit quite easily, that's a sure sign the place is a dump and you shouldn't buy from there.

and yes, my dad had a pet store..........

Good decision. For the record, ALL pet stores promise they don't use puppy mills. A lot of them might not even know. It's never a good idea.

Sorry, Charles, but pet stores are a thing of the past and there are too many bad ones to risk trusting that the one you're at is a good one. Whether or not it seems clean doesn't tell you where the animals come from.

The UK has such a great position on animals. If I move there I want to adopt a rescue dog. You can take your animal pretty much anywhere and no one minds. The first time I was there I was surprised how welcoming dogs were. They were all over the place, it was cool.

They bring them to the malls (& everywhere else) here in LA.

a thing of the past? oh please  you gonna buy a parrot off of the internet? word of mouth is a good indicator about pet stores - ask around, don't buy blindly at one.

in my experience puppy mills usually don't sell to pet stores, they sell to brokers. some pet stores may buy from a broker though and it would not surprise me if some of the puppies change hands half a dozen times before being sold to someone. a bit of advice - don't buy a cat. dog, bird from a pet store within several hundred miles of the mexico border either. it may have come across from mexico and yes i've seen some real horror stories from that.

my previous statement about a clean pet store was not meant to be a good indication about where the puppies came from. it was intended to indicate that if the store is clean, the puppies are taken care of better than mall pet stores. i've been in some that knock you down as soon as you walk in, i've been in some that you can't even tell there are puppies or cats in it.

while i won't condemn all pet stores like you have with your sweeping generalizations, i would point out that there is a major difference between a name brand pet store in a mall and a mid-sized independent not in the mall. the owner operated and run store is a better bet than a mall store for a pet imo.

uh oh... i'm definitely within that radius of mexico! pet stores are a thing of the past? there are a lot of higher end pet stores in my area and everytime we go they are packed full of people! everyone loves to go look at puppies. :) and since we go frequently i notice new puppies all the time so someone must be buying them! and the stores are pretty immaculate. i've never smelt anything there. but anyway we're not buying it! poor puppy can have a different mama! :(
