We wrote a brief, two paragraph statement that included: when and how our relationship started, and the dates/places we saw each other in person since that point. The dates we mentioned in this answer corresponded directly to the pictures, boarding passes, etc etc we included as evidence that we had met in the past two years.

i just wrote a simple...we met at work while he was here on his J1 visa. whats most important is that your evidence goes along with it. i sent copies of our pay stubs to show that we worked at the same place at the same time. you don't need to write a whole story unless you had a complicated situation. its totally up to you and remember that every case is different. just give enough evidence to prove that you met and you will be fine!! good luck

All that's required is to explain how you met. I used the space provided on the form to describe the circumstances by which we met in very literal terms; if they wanted a letter they would have provided space for one.

Example: "we met on <date> whilst I was on a business trip to <country/city> and dated from that point forward until my departure on <date>."

I wrote "See attached" on that line and then typed up an explanation of all the times we've met as well as how we grew closer as a couple, decided to get married, etc. I also sort of referenced the different evidence I was providing along with the petition, like: "During this initial period apart, my fiance and I maintained daily contact through telephone calls, instant messages and e-mails. I have enclosed copies of my cellphone bills from 2005, indicating the calls we made to one another, as well as copies of selected e-mails and written letters. ... In May 2005 I returned to Italy for 3 weeks to visit my fiance. I have attached copies of my passport indicating my dates of entry into Italy as well as my plane ticket receipt."
