I'm from the UK and had certainly never experienced temperatures like -28C or anything. But when it does hit that low here in VT (two weeks ago and probably again any time this winter), most locals say they never get used to it either. I'm now used to temperatures like -15c and think that is a little cold rather than f-king freezing. I don't mind the mountains of snow we get, but the ice rink driveway is a real ####### to walk down. It's not hard to spot the foreigner in my town.

Here in RI we get mountains of snow sometimes.I do not like it at all.

I think some people like it and others don't.

I grew up in the Middle East and I do not really have a problem with the cold. My first experience with snow was when I was sttending college in KS and the bone chilling cold was not fun. But after a while I got used to it. I like the cold, don't really mind it.

My finace gets scared sometimes when I tell him how cold it can get in Philly sometimes. He swears up and down that when he gets here we are moving to FL or TX or AZ, where there is no snow. I told him I have friends from Ghana who actually enjoy the cold and he cannot believe it. I told him he has to experience one winter before we make that decision.

See,that's what I want.A place with no snow.

The same way anyone adapts to the cold ... with time.

But I'm from upstate NY, transplanted to Florida. And I HATE the heat. Anything above 70 is too hot for me.

Okay we can switch. You come to RI and I'll go to Tampa.I love FL !

Amazonas is a really nice place (state) and although not SUPER hot, it's sooooo humid that you sweat like crazy. Florida is pretty humid so it wasn't THAT big of a change....though there is some change in weather (thank God).

He really wants to see snow and feel the cold.

I used to work with a little man from Colombia who went to the Amazonas in Colombia, and he was scared to death. He said the snakes just freaked him out.

I never liked winter - not the milder version of the Netherlands nor the midwest winter. I do not mind the cold so much (means I can deal with it) but I do not like snow especially if I have to drive in it to work.

I know what you mean.I can tolerate it,but I really don't like it.It just bums me out that the summer is so short here.I bought a 4 wheel drive just for the snow.It helps on the snow but not on the ice. :o

Well hubby experienced the cold temps in Georgia when we went to visit friends...It was in the 40's and then about 2 weeks ago we got a cold front that moved through South Florida, it was in the 40's again. Now I know many of our Northerners will be shaking their heads going, that's not so cold, but for us Caribbean people, it feels like we are in the freezer. It was nice cuddling up for the night, having hot chocolate and watching some movies...I am all for moving more North, but hubby doesn't think he can handle that. We'll see what happens when we go for a visit to NY at the end of 08.

LOL --- will love New England then, we had over 10" of snow here today (Monday) in the space of 4 - 5 hours and a max temp of 25F (-4 /-5C). :P New York City did not get the snow today, it was too 'warm' there (shocker)!!!

Mine is not here yet but he is freezing when it is 70 degrees there.

He thinks he knows what cold is here but  I just have to bundle him up.

This is my husband too!! He has been complaining about how cold he is and how he just can't believe how cold Jamaica is right now. I'm sitting in my freezing house at 40 some odd degrees thinking....he has lost his mind! So I googled his current weather....it was currently 78!!!!! what?! So yes he is gonna die here!!

One thing I can say when coming from the tropics the cold is one thing but the DRY air is another. He may get nose bleeds, bad skin rashes, dry skin, all from the cold dry air. I would get a humidfier for the home and make sure he covers his feet all the time. Keep them fully moisturized or they could get very dry and flakey. Invest in gloves scarfs and jackets.

Haha. We will see. Mai Anh has never seen snow, but she will probably come here in the late spring, which will be much more like the weather in northern Vietnam, so she will have several months before it gets cold again in say, November or December.

We will see how she adapts to air conditioning everywhere. She says she doesn't like air conditioning, but I predict within one year, she can't live without it, like most Americans! We will see. Hahaha.

I guess I'm unique because I hate air conditioning.I find it to be too cold.

Me too! I hate it. I love the heat. I'm with you I like 85 degrees and its all good. Love the humidity vs hot dey weather that feels like its buring your skin off.

My husband is from Colombia and never saw snow or felt cold weather like what we have in Denver. I bought him all the gear he needs, hat, gloves, scarf, snow boots, earmuffs, and a very nice jacket. He says that helped out a lot and is doing fine unless we have to walk outside while it's windy.

Adjusting to temps will likely be a major issue for us! Our last argument was while I was in jamaica... I didn't want to wear a jacket out in the evening (uh, hello, it was like 70 degrees... I was sweating!) and he was all bundled up! But on the flip side, neither of us can wait until he is here so we can cuddle up in the cold!

I am from Hawaii and hate the cold, though I can more or less deal with it if the temp is above freezing. Lucky for me most older NYC apartments seem to be overheated - the temp inside is usually about 85-90 degrees F, and I walk around in a T-shirt and lungi(sarong). I was freezing when I went to my mom's place in Fresno - she had the thermostat at about 67 degrees, it was drafty and the place had high ceilings compared to my dinky apartment so it was cold(to me) inside, cold outside and I hated it. When my husband comes here I think he will need to adjust too - he is from the southern jungle, not the mountains, and in KTM it doesn't really get that cold - they had snow for the first time in 63 years last Valentine's Day.

Yes, I am shaking my head, Tam. 40 degrees is like Spring here.

When we get below 0, Andre refuses to get out of bed sometimes! I used to laugh when he told me how cold it was in Jamaica.....at 60 or so. I kept saying, you don't know what cold is! I actually thought he was going to die when we went to Chicago in October a few years ago. He could not stop shivering.

And, St. Louis swelters in the summer. Andre, being from Jamaican, said it's hotter then he's ever felt. I told him he would hate the humidity!

Right on the money. We are fairly humid in St. Louis year round; but this time of year is tending to be dry air. Andre is experiencing nose bleeds regularly. I've got him using all kinds of Lush bath products.....natural, gentle, and loaded with oils and moisturizers to combat the lack of skin and scalp moisture.
