SHOULD MY HOPE BE RENEWED?

Well heres the update and question. We have been A/P since 11/14/06. My congressman contacted the DOS in Nov. 07 to inquire what this long delay was all about. Just got back the reply. The letter from Cairo embassy stated that our case is pending the required "vetting by security and law enforcement agencies." They regret and are aware of the many inconveniences this has cased my SO. They are not able to predict when the clearance will be completed because other agencies do the clearence. They hope and trust that the outcome will not be delayed much longer. " Not much longer" holds no real meaning to me , because after the interview they told him he would here from them in 1 month. To date he has never heard anything. How long can " vetting by security" take? They "assure us that the clearance is in the hands of the appropriate agencies."This is the first response that has indicated any concern for us at all. Usually it just says the case is in A/P and we will be notified when it is completed.Dose this indicate that a end is in sight? How long can this take? Any thoughts? Afraid to hope, Debbie.

Holy cow your case has been over a year in AP!? AP is the black hole especially at the Cairo consulate and from other threads that I have read there isn't a way to calculate when it will end. I am so sorry for your situation.

That is odd. They ask the visa applicant to submit a police report so why on earth would they need to have vetting by law enforcement agencies done? Seems rather redundant to me and since the police probably have absolutely no incentive to complete the deed in a timely manner that totally sucks for all of us. I mean at least if the applicant were to ask this to be done he/she could put in a bribe, as usual, but I doubt the consulate offers bribes.

Good lord. What is "vetting " anyway. But dont you think it could involve the FBI or CIA?

Good lord. What is "vetting " anyway. But dont you think it could involve the FBI or CIA?

Main Entry: 2vet

Function: transitive verb

Inflected Form(s): vet·ted; vet·ting

Date: 1891

1 a: to provide veterinary care for (an animal) or medical care for (a person) b: to subject (a person or animal) to a physical examination or checkup

2 a: to subject to usually expert appraisal or correction <vet a manuscript> b: to evaluate for possible approval or acceptance <vet the candidates for a position>

— vet·ter noun

I had to look it up. lol.

If it's in Cairo then no it's not the fbi or cia. Did they say it's in Cairo or at the state dept? If it was the fbi or cia it would make more sense since who in cairo would do this vetting when they already have the police report?

Thanks for definition. They did not say if it was in Cairo or the USA or the DOS. But your right , he did give them a policy report and he was finger printed. But to our knowledge they have never done a visit to his village. They have neve had or asked for a home visit. So do all applicants have to have a home visit? He has only had 1 interview. They have had his passport all this time because they said he could either take it with him or leave it with them. He decided to leave it with them because they said he would hear from them in 1 month. LOL how silly of us to have believed that one!

Deb -

I know your man is going through Cairo and mine is going through a different country, but your latest info sounds similar to what the DOS info line told me last week. They told me that his name has been submitted for security background clearance. In our case, the consulate has asked for a "follow up" from the various agencies (FBI, CIA, etc). Some, but not all, agencies have cleared his name.

Since our govt doesn't have a centralized name clearance system, the names (especially those subjected to some higher level of security clearance) are submitted to various US agencies -- I wonder how many --- who all must clear the name.

I'm sorry. No one can predict if an end if in sight. At least your congressperson's office got a response.

We are 9 months into name clearance and it is driving me crazy.
