Wedding Reception Back in the UK

For all K-1ers, any plans after getting married in the US to have a reception back home? We were married in Nov and it just occurred to us we should have some sort of party once AP comes through. Only about 10 of his family members were able to make it and since I lived in the UK for about 6 years and have my own circle of friends, we are def considering having a reception. Now, of course, we find ourselves in the same problem as before - couldn't really plan the wedding without the visa and here we can plan the reception without the AP - blah....

Well because of my crazy plans(!) and the visa taking so long we are having a non-legal wedding next month (yeah yeah I know but it was already booked from last April - USCIS just screwed things up :P) then at the end of June we are having a UK celebration to coincide with my mum's 50th - just an evening reception/DJ (first dance etc as aren't doing that in the US)/cake etc. Then we fly back to the US together and have our legal wedding in Vegas - three weddings - result!! :D

Haha - that's awesome! I love it - I don't feel bad for having 2 then :) I was just thinking, wow, it was nice to put all the wedding stuff behind us - and now, the possibility of arranging another event, is overwhelming! But it won't be nearly the size or details - so hopefully it will be like just arranging a birthday party.

Defo - our main wedding is Feb even though it won't be our legal one - it is the one we will celebrate our anniversary on though - had we not had a stupid postal delay (4 weeks) followed by the crazy USCIS incompetence then we would be making our wedding date. As it is it has kinda worked out ok (I'll confirrm that when and if I get into the country next month ).

We get to have the wedding we planned and dreamed of, a beautiful Hawaii honeymoon, a few months to save a little more, pack, go through interview/medical stuff then Jeremy flies out here at the end of June, we have an evening reception with everyone we wanted to invite (100+) so they can share it with us. We'll have our first dance in the UK, I get to wear my dress again and we can have a cake as well. Organisation wise we have a caterer already, cake is going to be from tesco then decorated with sugar flowers (or we know someone who does cakes), disco and venue (just a hall somewhere probably) and maybe some decent transport :) Then we get to fly back together which will be lovely and have a big cheesy Vegas wedding on the cheap

Funny thing is that of the three celebrations, the only time I am not going to be wearing my wedding dress is the day I actually get legally married

My husbands family had an engagement party for us in England a few months before the wedding. He has a huge family and a lot of family friends and most would not be able to attend a wedding in the states. They rented a hall and catered it and everything. Was lovely.

We were lucky that about 20 people from his family flew over to the wedding but it was still very nice for us to celebrate with everyone else!

Have fun and good luck for the future!

I'm not even close to being married yet - but I've been considering the possibility of having a UK celebration for a 1st wedding anniversary. I think it will depend on how many of my friends and relatives can attend the actual wedding.

It's going to be my grandparents' 60th wedding anniversary in summer 2008 so I'll have to be in the UK for that anyway!

I'd definitely arrange for it to be like a birthday party, though - it's bad enough having to plan one wedding, let alone any more! Alex and I are trying to fob everything off onto our mothers because we're completely disinterested - we'd have opted for a very simple civil ceremony, but our family and friends won't allow that.

We're hoping to have one in summer 2009. We were married last September, and hoped to have a blessing/ reception in England this summer, but really can't afford it right now!

I bought the most awesome dress though, from a charity shop (oh how I miss English charity shops!) it's new and pink and HUGE but in a nice way  - it's nice that I'll get to wear the big dress twice (and two different dresses!).

My mum wants to do the horse and carriage thing and go over the top, but I just want something small and quiet for my family who couldn't make it to our wedding.... anyways we'll see.

Haha - I would like a horse and carriage just to make a bit of an entrance in the UK as otherwise it will be a bit of an anti-climax!!! Besides I want confetti as I am not allowed it in the US as we are getting married outside :)

I want to see the dress!! Pink?!!? That's pretty brave!!!

The thing is, it's like not even a 5 minute walk from the church to where she wants to hold the reception - and the area where it would be is not the *best* area in Liverpool

We had bubbles instead of confetti at our wedding here but some of my family brought confetti (biodegradable) and threw it anyway! Rebels!

My dress - it's pale pink so it's not that brave!

I don't understand why you wouldn't be allowed confetti if you're getting married outside?

Bubbles! What a good idea!! I'll check it with my wedding planner :D

It's like a protected area or something and they have a lot of weddings there - it would just ruin the natural beauty of the place if there was ####### all over the place!!

The dress is lovely as well - I was thinking something really kinda bold...

I agree with Jeraly, that's a really lovely dress

Reminds me I have to think of my own, though! My friend's offered to make a dress but I have no idea what colour or style I'd like, and I imagine she'll not be able to make anything too complicated (she's pretty creative, but she's not a seamstress).
