P and I write each other fluegzeug briefs (airplane letters)...long missives that we give each other when the trip is over. Of course, we're still living apart so it works :)

And I read. A lot.

Earplugs and a good quality eyemask! They will go a long way if you do indeed decide to sleep. A nice little travel pillow is always good as well. I find that I'll bring a ton of things to play with/read/etc on a trip, but end up using hardly any of it because I spend so much time watching the people around me or just generally zoning out. Magazines are good since you don't have to get as involved as a book, and music is great too! If you go look around in walmart or some other similar store, they have tons of travel games that might keep you occupied for a bit.

Well.. I got there and back.. no need for anything on the way over. I was on what appeared to be a brand new airbus 300, touch screens on the back of the seats.. remote that pulls out of the armrest.. lots of Movies, TV Radio and everything else to watch or listen to... not many people on the flight.. easy, nice and I got to sleep!

On the way back I was on another airbus.. only this one was old!! had big fat TV's, flight was full of awake and excited tourists with (screaming) babies of course so no sleep for me. I think all the babies on that flight deployed their depth charges at the same time... there is no mistaking that smell or the fast movement of the mothers to the toilets. The 4 movies I brought on my MP3 player helped eat away at some time.

I can't sleep a wink on flights, the slightest jolt wakes me up (I'm not worried by flying, just a very light sleeper). So I normally spend time watching the films or listening to the radio they have on the flight.

United Airlines have a nice selection of XM channels which keep me entertained when I've reached the point where I've seen all the films that interest me and am contemplaying rewatching one of them  I also take a book just in case.

I have a PSP (PlayStation Portable) and it's a lot of fun. I'd highly recommend it over a Nintendo DS. I'm not saying this because I'm some sort of "Sony fanboy" but because I think it's a lot more versatile (it's not just a game-player; it can display movies, play music, view pictures, go online, sync up to a PC, etc), displays superior graphics, and has better games (although this is based on opinion) and the largest LCD screen available on a handheld gaming device at this time. It's also gone down in price, although to be fair, it's still quite a bit more expensive than the Nintendo DS.

I don't know how the NDS is powered (I know all varieties of Gameboys used AA or AAA batteries), but the PSP employs a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. That's good and bad. The nice thing is you virtually never need to replace batteries; all you have to do is recharge the battery and you can also play the PSP while hooked up into a wall socket (it'll be charging while you're playing too). The bad part comes into the picture when you realize that lithium-ion batteries have a finite number of charges in them, so eventually, they'll begin to grow weaker and weaker, and won't even hold a charge anymore. This shouldn't happen for a long time (I've had mine since 2005 and the original battery still works fine), but will happen at some point. The PSP isn't the only device this happens to though -- it's a widely known occurrence on most electric shavers and all types of iPods.

One last thing... if you do get a PSP (or if you already have one and are planning to bring it on a plane), make sure to turn OFF the PSP's wireless internet (Wi-Fi) function. The airlines will want you to turn that off while flying (even though the FAA has actually conducted studies for years, noting that wireless communication, including cell phone usage, does nothing to interfere with the avionics aboard the craft). If you don't know where that is, then chances are you haven't turned it on in the first place; however, just in case, it's on the lower left-hand side of the unit, where there's a small toggle switch. It's very easy to overlook and even easier to accidentally hit or switch on and leave on, thinking it does nothing. If you aren't going online or playing multiplayer games, then it's to your benefit to keep the Wi-Fi switch on OFF as well -- leaving it on depletes the battery quicker.
