I'm heading home (again) to Ireland this coming week and thought I'd ask what everyone else brought on long plane trips to pass the time? I've been back and forth a few times and sleeping seems to be the number 1 way to pass 4 or 5 hours  If it's an overnight flight of course...Having a few drinks at the bar/pub in the airport aids with falling asleep on the plane :hehe:

This time around coming back will be a morning flight with a return in the afternoon so I won't be sleeping much. I managed to get a nice yet inexpensive little MP3 player that also plays video which should help kill an hour or 3 I hope. I could liberate my wife's laptop for the trip but what would I do with it, play some of the many emulated titles we have and have an extra bag to carry. I'm not much of a reader in the air so that isn't really an option.

Ah well, it won't be too bad I'm flying Aer Lingus nonstop from Orland to Dublin  I hate changing planes..

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I like to download podcasts to my iPod for flights. Books on mp3 I don't enjoy as much, I think because originally they weren't intended for audio consumption. Podcasts (like This American Life and Wait Wait Don't Tell Me) of NPR shows and stuff hold my attention completely on a plane and I don't have to keep my eyes open.

Ambien is NOT a good idea for a five-hour flight! It lasts that long!

mp3 player, gossip mags, book...normally I don't really bring that much because all the flights I take to London have your own video screen so you can pick through lots of movies and music and games on your own

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

Airlines used to give you playing cards if you asked. Don't know if they still do... it's been a long time since I've asked. You can get magnetic game boards like backgammon and chess & checkers. But I guess if you can't find a willing partner that won't be much fun.

Take your laptop or a pen and notebook and write your memoirs. Make up stories about the people around you. Give them names and occupations and come up with types of conversations they might have or clothing they might wear at various events. Give them hobbies.... and some annoying habits. Record it in your memoirs so you can tell everyone about the fascinating people you have met on your travels.

If you don't like mental games, take bubblewrap, and keep it hidden. Then pop each bubble one at a time at specific intervals. You'd be amazed at how occupied your mind gets when you are counting down the seconds till the next pop. Look around the cabin as if you are trying to figure out where that popping sound is coming from. Pop a bunch all at once, and then excuse yourself. Ask people around you for some Gas-X.

Really, there's so much one can do to amuse oneself on a trans-Atlantic flight. :innocent: Have a great vacation!

I usually bring my laptop IPOD to keep me busy the sleeping part was hard especially when the plane gets really bumpy at times.
