Hello Wonder-Full Vjers,

Well, as usual I am curious about how many of you did it all in one shot, or broke it up into two parts.

Let me know your feelings/thoughts on your decisions, if you dare to share... :D

Thanks!

We were married legally and had our wedding at the same time. Outdoors in a lovely garden in a very unique ceremony. :) My baby arrived on a Saturday, I still had about two weeks of school left and I knew there was NO way the administration would allow me to take any time off so close to the end of school. We were married 7/7/06...it was miserable hot...but I don't think I remember being hot - I was too thrilled to finally becoming a Mrs. :D

I can't vote because there's no "part 2" for me! We were married twice. The first time was a civil marriage at the courthouse the week after I moved here. Two reasons: #1 - I won't tell that to people on a website. #2 - So that I would be covered right away on his insurance. (His insurance policy covered me immediately because I came in on a K-1, but we wanted to finalize it just in case.)

Then we had a full ceremony 3 months later. We'll celebrate both wedding dates because he forgot the first one and I'm making him pay. :P:devil: Plus, we went out to dinner at this place I'd heard so much about and wanted to try. But it rated 1 out of 10 and was a crushing disappointment.... The Goblin Market in Mount Dora. I highly recommend you don't waste your money. So on Wedding Anniversary Part Deux we'll go to my favourite restaurant.... Sushi Katana. Their food is to die for, and their service is impeccable. And they always do wine tastings (including sake) before your meal. I like wine and sake.

We celebrated our upcoming marriage in Canada before I left for the US with an Open House - many people back home consider THAT our "real" date..

But then we got married on paper legally the following week in our apartment with the Justice of the Peace.. so we have 2 dates pretty close together.. We're just going to use which ever one falls on the weekend. That was our solution!

THAT is brilliant. I wish I'd thought of that. :(

Nice restaurant Krikit! Obviously we are not K1, but I hate being left out haha

However! We did have a civil ceremony (it was really strange, won't go in to details) and had kind of planned to have another ceremony at some point and never got around to it.

Then again, I'm not all that interested in having another ceremony, don't get me wrong, I like weddings.

I hate weddings. Especially my own. My husband made me feel guilty about not wanting one with people in attendance. He said it was not only for us, it was for our families and friends too. I still hated it, but I guess I'm glad I did it.

Actually, I'm excited about my daughter's upcoming wedding, so maybe the above's not quite true.

We had a small church ceremony on February 18th and then our big wedding and reception on June 3rd.

We celebrate the 18th of February quietly, just us, and our families make a big deal out of June 3rd.

We aren't married yet, but here's what we are going to do:

1. Civil ceremony on beach with full reception afterwards in Seattle.

2. Church ceremony a year later in his family's church in Germany with a party for the German relatives who can't attend the US wedding.

His parents, siblings, an aunt and uncle, his best friend and my best friend are all coming from Germany, but he's got a large family and quite a few friends who won't be able to make the US wedding. Plus in Germany it's common to do a civil ceremony and then a church ceremony later, so that's what we'll do. Unless he can't get time off work or I get preggers..... I imagine we'll celebrate the US wedding date. But it will be cool if we can do it exactly a year apart.

We had a full religious ceremony (20 people in total were there) at a mansion 6 days after I came to the US.

(I had a ceremony we tend to advise against here on VJ -- you know, don't book anything until you have the visa in hand...  )

We had a reception right afterwards for the Oklahoma side of the family.

We then had two Open House receptions in Canada for my family and friends in September of the following year. We took our wedding outfits and our pictures and had a great old time. :)

We had a well a small wedding in my eyes. About 50 people, close friends and family. I did all the prep work while waiting for my K1 (booking a venue which was a castle  , booking the caterer, invitations, etc.) It was easy cheesy and it took my mind off of the whole waiting game.

I started planning our ceremony in August - as soon as we had an interview date. We married in Nov and had about 100 people wedding and reception all in one place. Now we are considering having a party back in the UK once AP is received, but we find ourselves in the same situation, wedding to be able to travel....

Thank you so much all of your for your heart-felt responses.

It's funny...I was most curious about a particular thing and hadn't mentioned it, and then Jundp is doing it and I met a couple that we went out for dinner with 2 nights ago (a small gathering at a yummy seafood resto...mmmmm, oops I'm digressing :D ) that had gotten married (civilly) and then having a wedding a year later. Although I realize that you, Jundp : two entire weddings in each of your home countries.

The couple I just met, had gotten married "on paper" and then a whole year later celebrated it with a church wedding complete with vows, etc.

I find these kind of things most interesting.

Have any of you heard of hand-fasting?

It is a promise for a year and a day; if all that was agreed upon is going well, then the couple "tie the knot" more permanently.

I love discovering where these expressions come from.

Well, my honey's head is spinning with all my unconventional ideas.

In the end, I am not hung up with anything per se; I will figure out what will work for him and do it.

I am not one to hang on to (I know Mumsie would find the perfect word here, hee hee) or follow normal protocol, convention nor the status quo.

Go figure! :P

So many unique ways of doing things.

Thanks again for responding.

We got married in a small ceremony in our living room with reception spilling out to our patio. We had intended to do the whole shebang again in Jamaica; but time and money are not cooperating.
