Cost of living can be really prohibitive when it comes to job searching. I'm interviewing for a job that would be in NYC, and would likely double my salary. But even with that I don't think there would be any way I could afford to live in NYC/Jersey City area. Since it would be a work out of home, and commute to do presentations for clients a couple times a week, I'm actually considering living in Allentown, PA and commuting to NYC when I have to.

Well, good luck with the interview! We'd almost have enough people for an NYC-area VJ meet-up!

I wish I had seen that list before moving to Miami  $950/month for a sm 1 bedroom, and only found that after I was willing to move away from work and off the bus route (a shitty neighborhood too). Eventually even bought a car :(

My previous studio was $750/month and ended getting shut down by the state bc roofs were falling in and the gas was turned off for a month.

Why jump all the way to Allentown from JC? There's an entire habitable universe in the middle. Besides, the commute from the Allentown area into NYC (even if you don't do it every day) on I-78 is a disaster.

Any suggestions inside that habitable universe between Allentown and JC? I was only using A-Town as a starting point, being from PA, I'm sorta familiar w/ the area.

Sure, there are many nice places to live in between. First of all, since you're going into the city, you wanna be within 5 miles of a train station if at all possible. Personally, I like Princeton/Princeton Junction, Matawan is nice, Red Bank and South Amboy ares nice if you don't use the schools, Edison/Woodbridge (Metro Park) is nice if you don't mind a lot of ethnic diversity, any community in northern Somerset county is very nice but expensive, etc. There's lot more than that. For 4 bedrooms that doesn't sound that expensive. Ask Mawilson, I think that's his neighborhood. :)

Well, I think it's silly to spend more than $5k/mo on rent - might as well get a million-dollar mortgage and buy the effing thing.

Chicago is great - inexpensive, friendly and down to earth, decent public transport, world-class museums, great restaurants, fantastic music scene, all the summer festies....

So a bit like St Louis, but far pricier? Seriously, The Lou has all the things you mention (and a better music scene, imo) and is much cheaper than the windy city.

Having read this thread, I truly appreciate the cost of living here. We're out in the boonies of Southern Illinois, and are paying $400-a-month for a two bed apartment. $600-a-month gets you a really nice 3-bed place in a private, country location. Of course, there is a downside to hicksville (hicks) but hey, you sure get bang for ya buck.

I'll never understand the appeal of New York City. $2900 to rent an apartment? GET REAL!

Meanwhile here in Houston, you can buy a 3900 sq ft house for $200,000.......200K with zero down at 5.25% on a 30 year fixed is roughly $1100/month. So you have $1800/month in your pocket every month forever. Wages aren't much different for high end work in either city. Both are money towns.

So what could you get for $2900/month here? Well that works out to about a $500,000 home. In Houston that will get you almost 5,000 sq feet. Like this one
