That's an awfully high NYC average.

I would imagine it's accurate though!

I wonder if they excluded the outer boros though.

I don't think you would have to to get that number. Finding an apartment anywhere in even Queens for under 1400 is hard, and there are tons for 6k or so in the city.

I honestly think if you averaged all the apartments' rents, you'd get some number like that. If you eliminated studios and the Bronx or something, I don't think it would get that much higher.

Maybe you're right. In which case the 'average' is skewed by the large number of people in the city who can afford a lot and therefore pay a lot. Perhaps a median would have been more useful, controlling for size. Median per sq ft, if you will.

I agree about the median per sq foot thing. How are we supposed to know exactly what they mean here? Is it what the average middle-income family is spending regardless of what they get for the money? That sounds about right.

Really, Chicago is remarkably affordable considering it's our third biggest city and has so much to offer... hmm... Rey might have a point about that city.
I've always thought it'd be cool to live in Philadelphia or Boston because of all the old buildings. :)

We have some of those in DC-metro area as well--particularly in "Old Town" Alexandria.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I'm thanking my lucky stars right now. I have a newer 2 bedroom Townhouse with W/D, parking, and w/s/g paid for $665 a month. It's only 3 units and I love it. Of course I'm in Oregon but still it's not really expensive.

New York, N.Y.

$2,922

A 2.8% vacancy rate should keep rents here high; they are expected to climb 6.6% this year. Renters in lower Manhattan and along Central Park pay the most, while those in the Bedford-Stuyvesant, Flatbush and Dyker Heights neighborhoods will experience some relief thanks to expected new construction.

Los Angeles, Calif.

$1,452

L.A. is the country's least affordable housing market, according to the National Association of Home Builders & Wells Fargo's Housing Opportunity Index, which measures the ability of the median income-earning household to own a home. Throw into the mix the region's high rate of foreclosures and subprime resets, and it's easy to see why there is a huge population of renters. They can expect monthly payments to rise 4.8% this year, thanks in part to a tight 3.7% vacancy rate.

Providence is getting up there also. The lowest rent is 800usd while the most expensive is 1800usd.Many people from NYC,Boston, and Hartford think Rhode Island is nice (ugh  ) and they do not mind paying these prices for rent.BTW:Nice picture of Nixon.

Here in CT it's not a pretty picture... 325 sq ft studio - $750 per month plus utilities (this is middle of nowhereville as well). Outrageous..

We moved to the "getto".. much more affordable housing....

Connecticut is crazy. $1000/month for 750sqft two bedroom, and that's probably the best deal in town. (New Haven's only got around 200,000 people, so it has big city rents with a small town economy.) Move outside of the cities and you get into nowheresville rents where nearly everyone around you owns their homes so the market is bizarre.

The thing that drives me nuts about CT is that most "landlords" require 2 months rent for security deposit! So you are looking at 5-6 grand up front to even THINK about moving in to a new apartment. It's extortion IMO and crazy that 2 months security Deposit can be actually asked up front! It's a Landlords' paradise here for sure!
