Really, Chicago is remarkably affordable considering it's our third biggest city and has so much to offer... hmm... Rey might have a point about that city.

I've always thought it'd be cool to live in Philadelphia or Boston because of all the old buildings. :)

Does "granny unit" basically mean something like a Suburban Lodge room?

Here in CT it's not a pretty picture... 325 sq ft studio - $750 per month plus utilities (this is middle of nowhereville as well). Outrageous..

We moved to the "getto".. much more affordable housing....

Connecticut is crazy. $1000/month for 750sqft two bedroom, and that's probably the best deal in town. (New Haven's only got around 200,000 people, so it has big city rents with a small town economy.) Move outside of the cities and you get into nowheresville rents where nearly everyone around you owns their homes so the market is bizarre.

Chicago is great - inexpensive, friendly and down to earth, decent public transport, world-class museums, great restaurants, fantastic music scene, all the summer festies - too bad about that lake effect wind that cuts through you like a knife

I just checked and the apartment I rent in the mid-nineties there for $375 a month (including bills) now rents for $900

My rental house is a 930 sq. ft. 3 bedroom, one bath, ranch style house with a double carport that I rent out for $900 dollars a month. It is in the lower middle class area of SE Portland. I could rent it for more at this time. But I don't. That covers the cost of the mortgage, taxes and insurance.

In the article it says L.A. is $1452 is that an apartment or a house?

Is it actually possible to fit 3 bedrooms into 930 ft2?

I'm surprised Washington DC didn't make Steve's list.

A 1-BR apartment in NW DC can clobber you for anywhere from $1,050 (400-530 ft2, NO amenities) to $2,100 (maybe 730-800 ft2, with in-unit W/D).

As comparative: my own apartment in Silver Spring (Montgomery County, MD suburb), a 1-BR/1-BA with den, 850 ft2 and in-unit W/D, rents for almost $1,100.

Hey you live close to me...

Virginia is expensive as well...and they want us to rent a two bedroom because of our 11 month old.

I am currently sharing a 1BR with a roommate and pay ridiculously low rent because the place is rent control- am dreading when Govi and I move into our own place because the bare minimum market rents I have seen are $900-1K and that is for a small studio or 1BR. And that is in Queens - thank God I don't even want to live in Manhattan. The real desi scene is here in Queens(Jackson Heights, Flushing(5 Hindu temples on one street), Sunnyside(which I call Namche b/c of the big Sherpa community there) , Richmond Hill(Indo-Caribbean), and to a certain extent Jamaica. I am praying that Govi finds a good job and we are able to stay here because I am unable to drive(vision issues) and after seeing the prices for Indian groceries in Fresno where my mom lives think that even if we save on rent we would pay extra on food and transportation(if Govi drives).

I am wondering where Honolulu is on that list - I think it would be one of the most unaffordable due to the tourist-industry low salaries and near-NY rents. So many people I knew there worked 2 or even 3 jobs.
