New York, N.Y.

$2,922

A 2.8% vacancy rate should keep rents here high; they are expected to climb 6.6% this year. Renters in lower Manhattan and along Central Park pay the most, while those in the Bedford-Stuyvesant, Flatbush and Dyker Heights neighborhoods will experience some relief thanks to expected new construction.

Los Angeles, Calif.

L.A. is the country's least affordable housing market, according to the National Association of Home Builders & Wells Fargo's Housing Opportunity Index, which measures the ability of the median income-earning household to own a home. Throw into the mix the region's high rate of foreclosures and subprime resets, and it's easy to see why there is a huge population of renters. They can expect monthly payments to rise 4.8% this year, thanks in part to a tight 3.7% vacancy rate.

My rental house is a 930 sq. ft. 3 bedroom, one bath, ranch style house with a double carport that I rent out for $900 dollars a month. It is in the lower middle class area of SE Portland. I could rent it for more at this time. But I don't. That covers the cost of the mortgage, taxes and insurance.

In the article it says L.A. is $1452 is that an apartment or a house?

That would be an apartment, and not exactly a spacious one at that.

We rent a small one bedroom apartment in Santa Barbara, about 90 miles north of LA for 1,200 a month. It's ridiculous!

When I went to college, my roommate and I rented a 3-bedroom house. It was on a beautiful lake, and had a sauna out back. We paid $425 a month!! $212.50 apiece.

In the article it says L.A. is $1452 is that an apartment or a house?

Is it actually possible to fit 3 bedrooms into 930 ft2?

I'm surprised Washington DC didn't make Steve's list.

A 1-BR apartment in NW DC can clobber you for anywhere from $1,050 (400-530 ft2, NO amenities) to $2,100 (maybe 730-800 ft2, with in-unit W/D).

As comparative: my own apartment in Silver Spring (Montgomery County, MD suburb), a 1-BR/1-BA with den, 850 ft2 and in-unit W/D, rents for almost $1,100.

We've considered moving to all those places this summer because of how impossibly expensive NY is. We haven't considered anywhere not on that list because.... there's a reason those places are expensive: they're the most fun to live in.

I was disappointed by the "in pictures"; I was hoping for pictures of sh!tty apartments with the price tag next to them. So I could feel validated. :)

DC is on seventh on the list (from Forbes.com)

1. New York City $2,992

2. San Francisco $1,904

3. Boston $1,658

4. San Jose $1,612

5. LA $1,452

6. San Diego $1,304

7. Wash. DC $1,302

8. Miami $1,080

9. Philadelphia $1,014

10. Chicago $1,010

LOL.

Our rent for a 2BDR apartment here in Laguna Beach has been $1,750 and they're raising it again, so we're moving to a cheaper area. It really sucks because Shea Properties promotes the place as having the zip code even though we're separated from the city of Laguna Beach by a canyon...we can't even see ocean where we've lived.

Without rent control and affordable housing, economic segregation runs rampant. When I owned my patio home (Valencia), the neighborhood was designed to have both lower priced patio homes integrated with larger, 2 story detached homes. We all shared the same pasios, parks, and community pools. It was brilliant.
