Google "dmv + (your state here)". You should find your state's dmv website. Look for ID requierments to determine whether you can request your driver's license now or if you'll have to wait until you get your EAD.

In North Carolina, for instance, you may get a DL as long as your I-94 is valid. Once expired, you may not get a DL or learner's permit until you receive your green card or EAD. What the DMV is looking for is proof of residency, and permission to be in country. A k-1 gives you 90 days.

Make sure you check your state's DMV rules BEFORE your I-94 expires.

05/16/2007 Interview. Embassy requests passport amended. Luckily the turnaround time is two days in Bangkok.

05/21/2007 Pu returns to Embassy with new passport, visa granted. Visa issued the following day.

05/26/2007 Pu arrives in USA!

05/30/2007 Married!

06/26/2007 Overnighted AOS petition to Chicago Lockbox

06/27/2007 AOS petition delivered to Chicago lockbox, signed for by V Bustamante

We had to wait for the EAD to arrive before Rich could get his driver license. He just finally got his license yesterday!

Our Timeline:

01/29/2007 NOA1!

02/26/2007 Became officially engaged in Rome:)

05/03/2007 NOA2!!!

07/20/2007 Visa Interview in London! Approved!!

10/04/2007 Small private wedding!

04/19/2008 Big fancy shmancy wedding!

AOS Timeline:

10/18/2007 Sent entire AOS, EAD, AP package to Chicago

10/19/2007 Package received in Chicago- signed for by V Bustamante

10/25/2007 NOA1 for AOS, EAD, and AP.

10/26/2007 Check cashed.

11/28/2007 Biometrics appointment in Denver.

12/17/2007 EAD card production ordered!

12/27/2007 EAD card arrives.

12/31/2007 AP approved.

01/07/2008 AP received.

02/01/2008 AOS interview in Denver. APPROVED!

02/11/2008 Green Card received in mail!

Done until July 09' !

Since your profile lacks where you live, I cannot give you a specific answer.

Driving privileges are giving by the state that you live in, NOT the federal government, so residency requirement varies by state, virtualy all require SSN, but also require residency evidence that varies from nothing to EAD, Green-card, I-551 stamp, valid I-94, etc...
