Losing citizenship in foreign marriage???

Hey all!

Just when you think things are going good.... something comes up.

I have dual citizenship, Hungarian and US. Fiance has Hungarian citizenship. I am preparing to wed in Hungary, as a Hungarian citizen. That's how the US Embassy states I need to marry as.

Someone just recently told me, who 5 years ago or so, was in the same situation, that they if they were to marry in Hungary they would have to give up their US citizenship and live in Hungary. Because the husband was a Hungarian citizen and she would have had to of taken on his citizenship and stay by his side or something weird like that.

Anyone know anything about this? Or anyone I can contact to get more information about this? The district office, in which my fiance lives, told us nothing about this, but she also isn't the smartest cookie nor has she been the most reliant. But have we a choice in this? :-/

Thanks a bunch!!!

Loss of U.S. Nationality

In some countries, marriage to a national of that country will automatically make the spouse either a citizen of that country or eligible to become naturalized in that country expeditiously. The automatic acquisition of a second nationality will not affect U.S. citizenship. However, naturalization in a foreign country on one''s own application or the application of a duly authorized agent may cause the loss of American citizenship. Persons planning to apply for a foreign nationality should contact an American embassy or consulate for further information.

That makes no sense, perhaps you are confusing the rules allowing somebody to DCF.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Sorry for the confusion.

The US Embassy in Hungary told me that since I have dual citizenship, i need to marry as a Hungarian.

Why?

Some weird Hungarian law that only allows Hungarians to marry in Hungary?

I would have thought that if for Hungarian purpose you need to declare your Citizenships on the paperwork you would declare all your Citizenships.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
