It is a little over 10ft long bumper to bumper, can seat four passengers comfortably, has reached speeds of 65 miles per hour and is set to transform the concept of travel for the masses in India and in poorer parts of the world.

This is the People’s Car, the world’s cheapest car at a starting price of 100,000 rupees ($2,500)...

...

Ratan Tata, the chairman of the company, revealed a cute, compact car designed to appeal to first-time car buyers in one of the world’s fastest growing car markets.

"I hope this is a car that changes the way people travel in rural and semi rural India. We are a country of a billion people and most are denied connectivity,” he said. “This is a car that is affordable and provides all-weather transport for the family.”

The aluminium car contains a rear-loaded 33 horse-power two-cylinder petrol engine and weighs about half a tonne. It is 3.1m long, 1.5m wide and 1.6m high and has four wheels pushed out to the corners to improve its manoeuvring.

The standard version – which will cost 120,000 rupees on the road after tax and delivery – comes complete with most features in any ordinary car: four doors, a four-gear manual transmission, seatbelts, locking and a steering wheel. A small boot allows enough room for a duffle bag.

...

The car will be sold first in India, with an initial production run of 250,000 a year, but is expected to be made available in other emerging markets in Latin America, south-east Asia and Africa within four years.

...

Tata says the car, which does 50 miles to the gallon, will conform to all present and future emission standards in India and Europe. It has also passed a full-frontal crash test and is designed to pass further impact testing under European standards, he added.

It's a cute little car, gets good mileage, good price, but I wonder how this will make Indian roads even MORE hectic? hmmm

LOL! Exactly. Of course, there aren't too many cars in rural areas, but there aren't too many drivable roads out there either. I just don't see how this fits in to India. They need roads first, cars later.

Come to think of it, most places without a lot of cars don't have a lot of drivable roads. Hmmm...

I love how there are, say 2 lanes of supposed traffic going in either direction but in actuality, about 12 lanes of traffic, what with the cars, motorcycles, rickshaws, goats, camels, brightly decorated lorries with tons of goods looking like they are about to spill over and random people and other animals all in the road at the same time. :jest: beep, beep...

That's not true worldwide. It is true in India though. Dirt roads don't count. Single-lane paved roads that handle two-way traffic don't count.

Did you ever have to pull off the road to let a lorry through?

That is the ugliest thing I think I have ever seen. All I can think of is it looks like it will take off into space once it hits 65 miles per hour.

Doubt it would do well in the US on snowy roads at all.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

I don't know, probably...our driver was fearless though and we just kept our eyes closed when he played "chicken" with other vehicles...

I'm skeptical. Are they testing this against bicycles that may also be on the road? Will it survive an impact with a Hummer?

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
