Social Security Number & marriage license

Greetings!

I was a bit curious about the acquisition of a social security number.

I know that my female fiancée (the non-USC) can apply for a SSN any time before or after marriage with a K-1. However, I've read also that it's much better to apply BEFORE getting married.

On my marriage license application, there is a field for SSN, and I am told to put zeroes if she does not have one. Since there's a waiting period on the marriage license, I was planning to get it before she enters the country. Thus, the order of events would be:

  • Marriage license applied for (SSN 000-00-0000)
  • Marriage license granted
  • Fiancée enters U.S.
  • Fiancée acquires SSN
  • Marriage
  • AoS
  • New SSN card with new name
If I put zeroes stating she does not have a SSN on the marriage license application, and she DOES have a SSN by the time we get married, will that cause a problem?

Otherwise, does SSA tell you your SSN when you apply for a card? If so, maybe we could apply for a SSN, then get the license. What I am trying to avoid is waiting 2 weeks for a Social Security card, then another 5 days for the marriage license.

Input? It's appreciated. I'm new at this

I think you'll find there's a place for your fiance's signature on the marriage license, so you'll be obtaining it after arrival but otherwise you order of events looks good to me. The last two items could be reversed or not.

You can leave the SSN blank for your fiance. Minnesota doesn't require an SSN if you cant provide it. My wife got her SSN after we got married and we had no problems.

Is there a waiting period to get the marriage license or a waiting period to marry after you obtain the license? I'm just confused, since when we got our license my fiance had to be present to sign the application for the license....then we had a 72 hour wait period before we could marry using that licence. I've never heard of a wait to actually get the license though....

I'm not technically sure if the waiting period is needed to obtain the license or to actually get married. I figure it doesn't make much of a difference. Everything varies by state, and here, the fiancee does not need to be present. Thus, I can have marriage license in hand when she arrives.

Thanks, Dan. Good to hear feedback from another Minnesotan. I think I'll plan to do the same as you and just get the SSN after marriage. What documents were asked for at the SSA? I'm assuming marriage certificate and K-1/passport. Anything else?

This is info for Crow Wing County, MN but the info is applicable to all MN residents as the waiting period or any other such regulations are statewide. Please see below(particularly the section in red):

Marriage Licenses

Applicants do not have to be residents of Crow Wing County or of Minnesota. A marriage license must be applied for in person, although only one of the parties is required to be present to complete and sign the application. To obtain a marriage license you must be 18 years of age. You must know for both parties:

Full names

Addresses

Dates of birth

State or foreign country where each person was born

County where each person lives

Social security numbers

The names the bride and groom want after marriage

If previously married, the date (mm/dd/yy) the last marriage was terminated

If previously married, the city, county and state where the marriage was terminated

$110 (check, cash, or money order only) is payable at the time of applying or $40 if the couple has obtained pre-marital education as per Minnesota Statute and brings in a signed and dated statement. The signed statement must be submitted at the time the marriage license is applied for or the full marriage license fee will be due. There are NO REFUNDS on the fees charged for a marriage license.

In the state of Minnesota there is a five-business-day waiting period after you apply for the license before the marriage may take place, although a waiver may be asked and applied for through the Court Administrator's office after completing the application. The license must be used within six months, and may be used anywhere in Minnesota.

Ministers of any religious denomination, before they are authorized to solemnize a marriage, must file a copy of their credentials of license or ordination in any county in Minnesota. There is no charge to file a copy of ministerial credentials. A copy of credentials may be brought to this office in person or sent by mail or fax.

All you need for SSN is passport with Visa and I-94 and your marriage certificate if your fiance will change her name with marriage.

If you go to the SSA office in Minneapolis, make sure you go early. we had to wait over an hour before we got through there.
