HI everyone. I am in the midst of getting everything together for the embassy and NVC. Quick question. As my mother is joint sponsoring due to my lack of tax returns in the past few years - do I need a certified copy of her birth certificate?

Thanks!

A passport, birth certificate or naturalization certificate are needed to show any sponsor is a USC. However, you will need to provide an I-134 too. Later you'll need to provide an I-864 for status adjustment after marriage. Technically, no tax return is required with the I-134 but either a return or reference to an IRS regulation exempting you from filing will be required with the I-864. If you didn't file because your income was below the threshold that requires filing, then a statement to that effect and supporting evidence would be needed. The evidence could be a W2 showing low income, or evidence you were a full time student etc.

Why have you not filed tax returns?
