I am engaged to a Candadian, who lives in Vancouver. My initial petition was received in Vermont on December 13th.

We have a whole wedding planned for the end of August and I am very nervous that this date will not be possible now.

Is there anything we can do to expidite the 6 month wait on the US side?!?! Not sure if it matters, but I have contracts, etc. to prove the plans.

If not, once the approval gets to the Consulate in Vancvouer, I understand that there is a cheklist of things for my fiance to obtain (medical, police records, etc) Can he do any of this in advance so that it is all ready to go and we can save a week or two and get an interview date ASAP?

Thanks for your help!!!!

Hi there and good luck! August is possible but it will definitely be cutting it close. My particular case is going to take close to a year to complete, we started in May and we hope to have an interview date by the end of this month. I am hoping for a wedding in April, but I am not booking anything yet. It certainly makes it complicated to plan ahead when you just don't really know when they will arrive.

I do not know of anything that can be done to expedite the wait on the US side. All you can do is wait and let the government wheels turn.

As far as what you need for him to obtain after your case gets to the consulate, he will need a police certificate, his original birth certificate, proof of your relationship, an affidavit of support from you that you will have to send to your fiance, the doctor report, divorce decrees if there are any, some passport photos, plus the paperwork he will get. Most of those things you can do ahead of time so they are ready. I didn't know that my fiance would need my divorce decree or I would have sent it before he got the Packet 3 from the consulate. Now that is all we are waiting for him to get before we can send in the Packet 3. I had already sent the affidavit of support forms and information before he got the Packet 3. Then we first have to let them know all that paperwork is done and then we get an interview date, and I have no idea how far out the date will be. I am assuming it will be some time in February.

Make sure all paperwork is correct and complete so you won't get any RFE's that can cause unnecessary delays. Otherwise I don't know what else to suggest other than to hope and pray things move quickly so you can keep that wedding date. Best of luck to you!

Jennifer :)

Actually, I have never read on VJ about someone being successful in expiating an approval when their petition is still in the hands of the USCIS. The criteria for them to do so is next to impossible, namely get them (USCIS) to admit they made a mistake and for humanitarian reasons.

Although I have heard of expiated handling by the NVC and consulates, the impending wedding date is not a sufficient cause to expiate processing.

However, being that your fiancee is in Vancouver and they have very reasonable wait times, it's not impossible for her to have her visa in hand by Aug.

I hope it happens :)

From start to finish, our visa journey will have taken 8 months. That was with 1 RFE. We went through California Service Center though, and they are MUCH slower about getting the file to NVC (that process took 3 weeks). After that, you can get an interview date in Vancouver very quickly. At least, currently you can. You can basically get an interview a week or two later if requested. End of August is definitely do-able if you get through the USCIS without any RFE's or problems

I hate to put a dampener on things but you might be cutting it a bit fine :) We did the same thing - booked everything thinking we had plenty of time...

What we are doing now is having a non-legal ceremony (no license, not signing register etc) and then having a small legal ceremony once we have the visa. It's risky - I might not get into the country (unlikely but all the same - have to be prepared for it :/) but we looked at all our options and decided that it was the best chance we had :)

By all means, if you will lose money by changing the date/cancelling the wedding then consider all your alternatives. You might get lucky but it is defo best to be prepared!

Good luck!!!

Your fears are well founded because your planning is upside down. There's a possibility the date will work but there are just too many variables. As others have said, if you could expedite your process for convenience based wedding plans, every fiance would make early plans and ask for an expedite, so forget that.

The hard fact is you will now know when he will have a visa until he has it in hand. So, it is wise to keep your planning in line with that fact.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
Understanding the big picture is priceless. Anonymous

Hi, we did the same thing: Planned the wedding without the official part, but the reason for us was that we're going to have two weddings. The first one will be in Moldova, and since to entry in the US on a k1 i don't have to be married(not even to my fiance-petitioner) we decided we'll do here the church wedding and the party, but the official part will be done when it's the right time.

This shall be a good alternative.

good luck

It seems way too difficult to predict a date when your visa will be in hand. Although, VSC seems to be moving fast, you never know what the future will bring. Your best bet is not to spend alot of cash on a potential wedding date. Atleast wait til to you are approved to get a better idea what will happen.
