STOCKHOLM, Sweden - A Swedish company plans to harness the body heat generated by thousands of commuters scrambling to catch their trains at Stockholm's main railway station and use it for heating a nearby office building.

Real estate firm Jernhusen AB believes the system can provide about 15 percent of the heating needed for a 13-storey building being built next to the Central Station in the Swedish capital.

About 250,000 people pass through the station every day, warming the air inside with their body heat.

The water doesn't need to be hot. If the water reaches 70 degrees, it could preheat air, reducing the load on the mechanical heater. If it is 57 degrees outside, the delta T (temperature difference) between the water and ambient air would be minimal, making it basically useless. If the temperature drops to about 20 degrees, the delta T would be much higher, thus the energy transfer will be greater.

Hydronic radiant heating is as common in Sweden as central heating /ac are in this country. If you can heat the water using otherwise wasted energy, that's pretty neat imo.
