Platy the only time I ever thought I was a bike freak I rode from downtown Indy to Carmel on the bike path and back...first off I wanted to die, then I wished I was dead, then I thought I might be dead, my a$$ was hurting for days and I haven't rode a bike since

you sure, that was the reason

haha well I don't think the real reason is appropriate for this forum

Gee, great bike trails in LanceLand? I can't imagine. LOL

Yup. They go from that up to about $120 for the racy version.

How does that work to sit on... It looks like you're supposed to hang your tackle through the gap

Only if you're hung like a light switch (thankYOU, Joyce for that classic!). I think the gap in the saddle means that the nerve under your manly danglers isn't pressing against the saddle.

I used a bicycle for transportation for many years. Into my 20's. I loved riding hard and fast for long distances. I would take rides from SE Portland up to Vancouver, Washington on regular basis just for the fun of it. About 5 miles each way. It was more of a street urban riding, like the movie quicksilver. I modified my 12 speed road bike with motocross bike accessories. Only front brakes, removed the back. Jumped curbs and street grates, dodged prostitutes and homeless and basically raced the cars which I could keep up with if I had a slight downhill slope. :P

Great Fun!!!

My beloved Joy is here, married and pregnant!

Baby due March 28, 2009

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

The keys to riding anything other than a short distance (more than 10 miles) pain-free are:

A) A proper saddle. If you're male, buy a male saddle. If you're female, buy a female saddle. Expect to spend up to $50 on a good one.

2) Cycling shorts. People wear cycling shorts for a reason, and it ain't for fashion. Cycling shorts have a "chamois" (essentially, a butt pad) in them that makes cycling pain-free. Things like underwear, jeans, regular shorts...they have seams in them. Seams rubbing against certain areas are gonna cause a lot of pain. If you're the modest sort, you can buy mountain bike shorts which have a cycling short inside of (and attached to) a normal pair of shorts (without the nasty seams).

C) A proper bike. Riding a Wal-Mart/Target/Costco special will put you off cycling faster than anything. A typical mountain bike from a big box store will weigh 40-60 pounds. My main mountain bike weighs 25 pounds. Big Box store bikes come in one size. A proper bike - from a bike shop - comes in different sizes. For instance, Raleigh mountain bikes come in many sizes. For an entry-level mountain bike (Mojave 2.0), you can get the following sizes: Mens:12,14,16,18,20,22 Womens :12,16,19. The sizes refer to the length of the seat tube. A 12" MTB would be perfect for a person around 4'5" or so. At the other end, a 22" end MTB would be ideal for a person around 6'4" (unless he's tall but has short legs). You really do get what you pay for.... a bike shop will put you on the correct size bike, can change parts to make the bike fit you better, and can make recommendations about position to make your rides more enjoyable. It isn't that much more expensive, either..... the aforementioned Raleigh Mojave 2.0 retails for around $250.00.

Ok, I rambled on WAY too long.... you'd think I was a bike shop employee or something.....

Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. ####### coated bastards with ####### filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive bobble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine.

OK Platy, dusting this thread off...

I want to get back into cycling at this time of the year. I've been out of it for almost two years now...

Usually a MTB type, I rode a Cro-Moly Schwinn Mesa (21") for a while. Then I switched to a Hybrid for city riding- a Specialized Expedition... not that happy with that one after having a MTB... but anywhoo...

Now I want to try out a road bike. My budget is about $700 tops, and I've been looking through Craigslist as well as checking out a bike coop here in Chicago that offers great deals on all kinds of bikes... but no luck thus far. Maybe I'm being too picky with what I see and should just forget about trying out a used bike.

6'1" and 225lbs. I have been looking at Langster- London/New York (Specialized)- even though they're at the top of my range and other fixed-gear road bikes like the Schwinn Madison/Cutter. Don't know why, but I feel that I don't want to bother with multi-speed bikes anymore and make my legs do a little more work at the beginning. I'm obviously rambling a bit but perhaps Platy and a few others can give me some pointers about sizes and ideas about what to look for.

Thanks!

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
