So my Husband went for his medical today - Dr. Viljoen - Hummingbird Medical, Cosmetic and Aesthetic Institute, 100, 1919 Sirocco Drive S.W.

Calgary (Big brown building) P. (403) 242-0484 (press 3 to hear all the stuff you have to take then press zero to speak with a person to make an appointment)

http://www.hummingbirdcosmetic.com/html/practice.html

Cost $260 - must be paid in cash. If you need immunizations they can be had for a fee - which can be paid with debit.

Medical can be picked up 4 days later (they will also send it by courier if you like - details on website).

The side of the building facing the road says Hummingbird, but the awnings say furnishings and accessories. Once inside there are 2 desks, main and a little one person cubby hole with a sign that says 'family physician' - that is the one you go to.

Appointment was for 1:00, he showed up about 10-15 minutes early and only had to wait about 3 minutes (was originally for tomorrow but they called yesterday to change it as the Dr is not going to be in). The Nurse took him in to a room and took medical history - any history of - the usual. He was then shown to another room, computer wasn't working in there so they took him to another room. Told to take clothing off from the waist down and given a paper sheet. He waited in there about 10 minutes before Dr. Viljoen showed up. He said he seems like a decent guy with a 'Dr Attitude'.

Has a look/feel down there - "making sure there are only 2, if there are 3 you have to wait here until one is gone - if there is only 1 then you can still go".

Has to take off shirt, listens to chest, stomach, takes blood pressure, general prodding.

He then gets his tetanus shot ($30), which he knew he would have to get, Dr told him it would hurt for about a week.

That's it, he then proceeded to the front desk, paid and was given sheets for the lab and xray and was out of there. He has had a titre for MMR, which isn't back yet, however they said it was fine for him to drop it off on the day he comes to pick up the medical next week.

One thing the Dr did mention was that the new guidelines require many more vaccinations than before (which are not generally given in Canada during childhood), it mentions them in the interview letter - also mentions that it is up to the Dr to determine which ones apply.

Blood tests are at: Calgary Lab Services - Glenbrook - Bay 154, 3715 – 51 St SW

X-ray is at: Radiology Consultants Associated - Westbrook Professional Building - 200, 1610 - 37 Street SW (right next to Walmart at Westbrook Mall - but it is a separate building)

Trailmix, really happy you didn't have any difficulty. Explain the "Dr. Attitude," are you suggesting that he was being a condescending orifice?

wow Hummingbird is getting better. they actually called you to let you know that the doctor wouldn't be there at the time of your appointment. Fortunately we just had to drive back across town when the Dr didn't show up for the hubby's apt. must really suck for those poor people that have to drive from SK

good to know that 1 or 2 are acceptable but 3 isn't. ;)

summer fling failed to fizzle, married 2003

I-130 mailed 12/15/03

4/1/04 no word from NE contacted senators office, app found

NOA1 4/13/04

Gave up on ridiculously long US process-started Canadian

12/4/04 submitted app

LSS app returned because of missed signatures, lost in transit, resubmitted in June

9/28/05 landed, yippie

10/4/05 fly back to US to "finish up Master's" lose mind and switch to PhD

Damn it back to the US process

3/something/2005 finally get NOA2, no idea why it took so long

4/15/07 get case approval from NVC

8/9/07 Montreal here we come

10/14/07 hubby activated his visa

Yes, apparently he even apologized for having to change the appointment.

As for the Dr Attitude - he says it is the arrogance and self righteousness thing.

What a pain in the but the medical has been!! Glad its over

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

So you were there for about 25 minutes in total?

Sheesh, it seems like BC is the only place that it takes 8 hours to get the medical done. $275 in BC too.

I'm so looking forward to having the Dr tag to justify my natural arrogance and self righteousness. Course then people will just remind me that PhD stands for piled higher and deeper, but I'll know better :hehe:

Interesting and thanks for the review. In my case i just had my medical, the dr was the one who asked the questions about my medical history, only asking more than once if i have any heart and hyper tension problems, which in my case are none and which surprised me of his insistance. He asked me if I smoke and how many cig. i answered, he said that's too much, i answered: that's my only vice. He didn't ask me to take the clothes off, just checked my belly and asked to breath osculting my back; neither check the eyes or open the mouth. I did the x-rays there at his office and a nurse did my vaccins (only the MMM stuff wich i paid). I was really surprised (i worried before soooo much) of how easy all was and everybody even busy with other things were professional with a reassuring attitude, especially the dr. which I told them.
