I'd just like to chime in here. I'm friends with the kid. He doesn't live at home most of the time, typically he's in the dorms at college. I have a feeling he's not going to be going back home again either. The mother is trying to act like she's the greatest thing on earth but trust me when I say this, she has opressed him to no end.

Ditto. And having discussed this with my two young (19-year old) employees, they concur that their own parents' reaction would be similar. Probably far less witty than the newspaper ad and less publicity, but with similar results - no more car.

Good Morning America? BBC? This is crazy! I'm clearly in the minority here in thinking that the attention this story has received is absurd. The kid is 19! He's an adult! He reneged on an agreement--an agreement between adults, I might add--so the person who bought the car (who happens to be his mother) took it away. That's it.

I don't understand why this shameless attention ####### of a mommy is being hailed as some kind of heroic parent. She is getting a lot of congratulations from idiots who apparently consider a 19-year-old college kid a child, and she to be a kick-a$$, law-down-the-law parent. So she took the car away. This kind of stuff happens all the time. I knew a couple of kids in college whose education, including living expenses, was fully paid for by their parents (or would have been). In both cases, the kids partied too much and flunked out the first year. If they wanted to return to school the following semester (on academic probation), they had to fund it themselves, end of story. They were both 18 at the time. Where was the media then? Why wasn't that a big story? Oh yeah, there was no classified ad saying, "World's meanest dad is making Brooke pay her own tuition! Send your camera crew to my house!"

I think the fact that this has been such a big story says more about our lame media and society than it does about the kid, or indeed his dumb-a$$ mother.
