I remember my first day on here- I got chewed out my another member (she was the USC and a regular in the Canada forum, she's not around anymore) She told me not to ask stupid questions and that people will accuse me of being a Troll.

Was that in the Canada forum or off topic? Not a nice start to VJ!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Here's my first post, much like many others.

Hello, everyone...

I'm just now getting everything together for the I-129F, and I don't think we have time. I'm Jeremy, and I'm the USC, and my fiance and her daughter live in Canada in the city just across the border from me (I can see Canada from my window). We set the wedding date for September 1st, 2007.

If I file for the K-1, and we don't recieve it in time, can we still get married? If that happened, though, she'd have to stay in Canada while we then file for a new K-3, right? All those tolls for the bridge are adding up!

Alternatively, since a Canadian can visit the US for up to six months, should/could she just move in with me anytime this summer, get married, and then file for something after the wedding?

As if wedding plans weren't hectic enough!

I pretty much got told - very sternly - that I needed to file my tax returns post haste! I remember being slightly offended. The thing is, all my Canadian income was deductable and I had never filed a return and only received my passport in February 2007 (documenting my citizenship). I remember saying that I didn't think the IRS was going to be tracking me down anytime soon.

I joined in September 2005 but the last post recorded is January 2006. I think my first ever post was my intro, and what visa we were applying for and that YES I DID READ THE GUIDES. :)

Oh dear, my first post was pretty long so I won't copy the whole thing, but I actually began by saying "That's a commonly asked question." It was in response to someone asking about what to do to try to accomodate his future mother-in-law's wish to be there at the couple's wedding ceremony (if memory serves, she would not be able to travel to the US for the wedding and the couple had already filed for a K1 and made it clear to the mother that the legal wedding was going to have to be in the US).

Finally was able to access my first post . . . it was in response to someone asking about transferring AOS applications to California:

"Posted on: Jan 29 2006, 09:34 PM

We received a notice in the mail advising me that our file had been transferred to the California Service Center. I phoned the information line to find out what it meant (hehehe, a long way to go for an interview from Atlanta) and was informed just the processing was transferred to California as they had space in their work load to help some of the other backlogged centers. So, if your case gets transferred, they will tell you. It is also listed on the on-line status update for our case number."

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

"About to start the process...

Posted on: May 30 2006, 10:26 PM

Hello, everyone! I'm new here, and I'm needing some guidance before my Canadian fiancé and I start the process of getting the K-1 visa...

Réjean has not filed his taxes for the past 5 years or so, and the government found out about it and is demanding payment. If we go after the visa while this is unresolved, will he end up getting denied because of it? Both of us live on our own, and it is going to take him a long time to get this all paid off. What we were hoping we could do is go through the process of getting the visa for him, getting married, getting the EAD, etc., and then once he gets a job here, we can both get it taken care of.

Thanks in advance for your help!"

(The tax issue never affected the visa process at all. Since then, he's filed all his back taxes and gotten the whole situation almost completely resolved.)

08/25/06 - 08/08/07 - K1 timeframe from mailing the petition to the NSC to K1 approval at the Montréal Consulate

08/31/07 - Réjean makes the big move to the USA

09/22/07 - MARRIED!

10/09/07 - Réjean gets his SSN

Adjustment of status:

10/26/07 - Mailed AOS/EAD/AP

11/23/07 - Biometrics appointment

12/14/07 - I-485 transferred to the California Service Center

12/28/07 - EAD approved!

01/07/08 - EAD received

02/08/08 - GREEN CARD APPROVED!!!!!!

02/16/08 - Green card received!

*headdesk*:

01/02/09 - Réjean loses his wallet containing his drivers license, Social Security card, and green card

02/04/09 - Our best friends bail us out by giving us the money to file for the replacement green card!

02/12/09 - E-filed I-90 for the replacement green card along with the $370 filing fee (including biometrics)

02/19/09 - NOA1

02/25/09 - Biometrics appointment

05/01/09 - Replacement green card received

Removal of conditions:

01/07/10: Mailed I-751 packet by overnight mail to the CSC

01/11/10: I-751 packet delivered and signed for

01/19/10: Received NOA1

01/28/10: Biometrics (did walk-in due to Réjean being out on the road on original date of 02/10/10)

02/03/10: APPROVED!!!

02/05/10: Received e-mail from USCIS saying the card production has been ordered

02/06/10: Received letter typed on plain paper from USCIS congratulating Réjean on his removal of conditions approval

02/11/10: Green card received

My first post was about EI!! Glorious old days!! Back in Nov 2006.. you all were so helpful!!

So let me see if i get this straight. When I leave work (sometime in Jan/Feb), i make sure that relocating for marriage is on the ROE, then I apply for EI right away, and from the date of issue of the visa and for the next 90 days i am EI eligible (less the 2 week waiting period). Then I need to supply proof that I have my EAD and then it will continue until my weeks are up or until I find work in the US? This sounds too easy.. I'm still not wrapping my mind around why the CDN gov. will give citizens who choose to leave the country EI Benefits. But heck! I paid in (and have never ever claimed before).
