ErikaAndHamit,

It was explained to me at our local office that in order to be issued an SSN as a K1 visa holder, it must be applied for after entering the country but before marriage. After getting married the K1 visa no longer applies and you have to wait until the EAD card is received. We found that out too late because we were already married when we went to the office to apply for the SSN. Sure enough, we took my wife's EAD card to the office the same day she received it and we weren't there more than 10 minutes before the SSN was ordered. We were kicking ourselves for like 5 months for not visiting the Social Security office first :)

Wow, this is valuable information!! Thank you for sharing it!

I know what one of our first stops will be after Yilmaz arrives :)

Well, I am off to pick him up at the airport!

Have a great day everyone :)

Hi/Merhaba Everyone

Just wanted to stop by and see how everyone was doing and hope that everyone is well & happy! (L)

It's so interesting to read that there is a "baby boom" going on in our Turkish group and so happy for everyone going through this experience, it is a wonderful thing to be a mother and hope that everyone will be as blessed as I have been with my own sons and now grandsons!!! Many many Congratulations to all the expectant mothers to be!!! (F)

For now I am going through some changes in my life and soon I will be moving out on my own again. I am sooo looking forward to that because things have been very tough and now I will be able to say that I will soon find peace!

I may not come to "Just Turkish" as much as I used to, but I will still be coming to VJ and posting mostly on the OT forum. Of course I don't think it will be possible for me to stay away from VJ completely!

Right now I am anxious to hear of Wendy's happy reunion with Yilmaz, it was a day that she has waited for long enough and I wish them both a lifetime of happiness! :luv:

Well, I will keep everyone in my thoughts and wish everyone much much love & happiness! (L)

Hi Everyone - It sounds like there is a lot going on in everyone's lives. I am still hoping we can plan some sort of get together in the near future. Any destination suggestions? Where is everyone located, anyway?

Onur applied for his SSN on Friday and should be getting it in the mail in about 2 weeks. We also got our marriage license on Friday and are planning to do a civil ceremony this coming Friday at City Hall. We're hoping to have our traditional wedding ceremony and reception early this fall.

The woman we spoke with at the Social Security office told us that Onur was allowed to work on the K-1 visa, as soon as he has his SSN. I wish we had known this earlier! She even pointed out the memo that I had printed out from VJ's site and brought in with me (to show that K-1 visa holders are eligible for SSNs). The memo states "Some I-94s issued to K-1s are stamped or annotated 'EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZED' and some are not. Either way, the I-94 is proof a K-1 alien is authorized to work." You can find the memo here: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...page=otherforms. It looks like this memo was dated 2000, but the SS officer pointed out this statement in the memo when I told her "No, I don't think he can work on a K-1 visa". I think she said, "Anyone who has a valid SSN can work." Does anyone have any other information about this? Onur is planning on applying for jobs once he gets his SSN in the mail, but we want to be sure that everything is legit and that he's not breaking the law!

Hey Merk - Good to see you on here again.

Congrats on your pregnancy and hope you have a HH9M

I was surprised to read you are filing for the N400 so soon after your DH's arrival to the US, then I remembered you are military. I guess special rules apply in your case - military spouses.

I'm not sure as to how the procedure goes for military filings, but you may want to pop on over to the VJ Naturalization thread found here. Surely, there are other VJers who have gone through or are currently going through your same process.

And, of course USCIS website has a whole section about it.

Good luck and KUP with your N400 and baby status!
