Married Name

I'm sorry if this has been asked already, but I couldn't find it. I'm the USC and I will be changing my name when I get married. When I fill out the I-864 to use with the I-485 for my future husband, do I use my married name? The example forms have a male USC and a female foreigner and so the USC doesn't have to worry about the name changes.

I used my married name . The marriage certificate shows that you were married hence the name change.

I also used my married name on all documents submitted.

I used my maiden name, as I still haven't changed my name oficially w/ the SSA. After we were married when I tried to change my name w/ both my employer and my bank, I was told that the name change is not "official" until it is done w/ the SSA and therefore they could not change my name. Since my affidavit of support documentation (i.e. W-2's and tax transcripts) on my husband's AOS application, is all still in my maiden name, I used that name on all the forms where asked.

i changed driv lic first, then went to soc sec yesterday and i was informed the marriage certificate had to be registered with my country court clerk. So i made a trip downtown did this and returned to soc sec now my card is to be mailed so u might check before going to your soc sec i have heard some dont req this but i was. Now on to the filing as married name..

Hmmm....it's sounds like then I would base it on whether I will make it down to the Social Security office before we file. I know all my tax returns will still have my maiden name so maybe it would be best to fill out everything with that instead.

You can start using your married name right away - my name on our application was my married name, even though none of the paperwork had that name on it. I'm the USC. To make it official you have to go to SSA and the DMV, but I know a woman who didn't change her SS card for 23 years...obviously you shouldn't do this, but if there's a little bit of a lapse it won't really be an issue.

wonder if the rules vary at all by state. in california your name change is not effective or legal until you go to the SSA office. the marriage license is one of the documents that allows name change, i was not allowed to make any name changes anywhere until i received my physical card.

also i was amazed at the number of places that require an original marriage license to change your name. so get several copies!

In FL, all you need is a marriage certificate to get your name changed on your DL. Since I show my DL more than my SS card, while the full process of changing my name wasn't done, using that name was still valid.
