The U.S. economy is in a recession, David Rosenberg, chief North American economist for Merrill Lynch, wrote Monday. "Friday's employment report strongly suggests that an official recession has arrived," Rosenberg said in a note to clients. Other Wall Street economists have said much the same thing. "The key question now is how deep the recession will be and how long it will last," wrote Richard Berner and David Greenlaw, economists for Morgan Stanley, in a note to clients on Monday. Over the weekend, Harvard economist Martin Feldstein said he believed there was a greater than 50% chance of a recession in the United States this year. Feldstein is on the committee of academic economists who typically determine when recessions begin and end.

The real question is, when will GWB admit it?

I expect as soon as it's official - we need two actual consecutive quarters of negative gross product growth for that to happen.

The real question, in my mind, is when will he stop saying the economy is healthy and strong when it clearly no longer is?

I can't tell if that's a compliment or not, but I shall assume yes!

Looks like our President is taking his first baby steps towards acknowledging what everyone who buys gasoline and groceries already knows....

CHICAGO — Dampening the administration’s customary upbeat tone on the economy, President Bush acknowledged Monday that the economic signs were “increasingly mixed” ...

...

Mr. Bush, in his speech, told business leaders that ... “recent economic indicators are increasingly mixed” and the nation faces economic uncertainty.

“We cannot take growth for granted,” he said. “We confront economic challenges from the downturn of the housing sector, the high energy prices to painful adjustment in some of the financial markets.”

LOL VJ's political landscape sure has shifted over the past 3 years.... remember all the Bushbots who could not stop extolling the virtues and infallibility of their glorious leader ? They're mighty quiet these days....

Edited to add: I wonder how incanada is coping with it all....

i miss incanada

to address your statement of virtues and infallability, i measure that by my checkbook and income tax statement. 2007 was the most i've ever made in my life, about 90k. :D

Sure, and the unemployment rates probably agree with charles' assertion... the rate is not lower so that may account for having made more? :P J/K...

but yeah, individuals can account for individual success stories while society as a whole continues to go the way it goes.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
