What Made You Choose The K-1 Visa Instead Of the Spouse Visa?

(1) We are not married

(2) It was faster than going back to Ghana, getting married, waiting for the marriage cert and all that other stuff. I filed the K1 2 months before I went back to Ghana to visit and we got approved 2 months after I got back. If we had waited I would have filed in August.

(3) To beat the fee increases if we were to wait to get married.

We honestly didn't know much about the whole process when we started and again - we felt that by going through the K-1 we could continue our relationship and see how things went while applying for the visa - if things didn't work out in the meantime then at least we hadn't just got married the immediately put the pressures of a long distance relationship onto it :)

Needless to say two years on we are very happy - we have pretty much mastered (if yuo ever can!) the long distance relationship and are looknig forward to the challenges of living our future lives together :)

The k1 takes less time. It's really getting faster, and that shall be a good reason.

We decided to go the K1 route because Steve has stronger family ties than I do. Plus we did not want to be apart once we are married.

We talked about other options like him moving here for a year or so but in the end we agreed that it would be better (social and financial-wise) to live in the US.

In every difficulty lies an island of opportunity.

Mainly because we did not want to be living apart while married.

Also, we got engaged after only three months. Although I knew my fiance for over three years before we started dating, we really only started to get to know each other very closely a month or two before we became a couple. I did not want to get married that soon, so applying for a spousal visa would have meant starting the whole process several months later for us.

The main reason we went with K1 is that we could send it off right away, rather than waiting until after the wedding to get started on the process. I knew it would take a few months to organise the wedding, and I wanted to get our application into USCIS's hands as soon as possible. Also, the timelines looked a little faster for K1's.

Because being engaged apart sucks but being married and apart truly sucks!

This, and several other reasons:

- K1 process is generally quicker.

- We're both fairly young, and while this isn't a problem for us, it's more reassuring to our family and friends.

- It allows plenty of time to save up for and plan the wedding/moving (although I'd be more than happy with an extremely simple civil ceremony, our mothers have different ideas and somehow it's snowballing and now might be turning into a rather big occasion!)

It would sort of feel like cheating if we got married before we could be together. (And god forbid the application got denied or something!)

Plus, I am divorced, and am lucky to receive a sizeable alimony. If we were to get married first, the alimony would stop immediately, and I need that money right now to get by on my own. :/

Maybe it's because we're both non-traditional and non-religious, but for us the whole process of getting engaged and married was merely a formality that we followed so that we could live together. Under different circumstances, we probably wouldn't be engaged/married; not because we don't love each other and want to spend our lives together...it's just that we don't feel the need to use marriage as validation of our commitment to each other.

If that makes sense?
