I am soon to go to Bangkok for my fiancees interview. I think I am ready. After the interview and before we return to America she has informed me that her family would like to have a wedding cerimony. How do I make sure that this does not affect our K-1 visa. Or in other words, to have a wedding that is not legally binding in the eyes of immigration officals. Thailand people or any one that knows help me out please. I would hate to make mistake this late in the game. :D

1. Don't sign anything

2. Don't register the wedding.

3. Don't call eachother "husband" or "wife" especially at the POE (make sure she understands this)

4. Don't wear wedding rings at the POE.

I'm sure there are others, I just can't remember them at the moment. The big thing is to make sure that the inspecting officer does not become suspicious and think she is allready married. Remember even though she has a visa it is the officer who has the final say if she get's past the POE.

Sorry to be picky...

Please can we call this an engagement ceremony if it's not a legally binding wedding? People get confused, and we all know what happens then....

And if it is a legally binding wedding, I would recommend not doing it :P

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.

daveaway,

In addition to what others have said....it should not be a problem as long as you DO NOT REGISTER the ceremony at her local amphur (local "court house").

Back in July 2004, I did the same thing, have an "engagement" ceremony at my then fiancee's home before she had her K-1 interview.

By the way you may want to practice squatting down for a LONG time as it may be a shock to your leg muscles :crying::P

Congratulations to you both and good luck to both of you and to her on her interview!!

regards,

George

Leave out the part "I now pronouce you husband and wife" ;) I don't know if that is said in thailand ceremony.

twellspeak had really good suggestions I think. :)

Don't worry... he won't understand a word that is said!!! :D Just make sure to have your Sin Sod ready!

Engagement Ceremony is the proper term for what takes place, even under Thai law. Until a couple goes to the Amphur and registers their marriage, and signs the papers, they are not legally married and do not have their Marriage Certificates.
