Hello,

I am confused as to if everyone had to do this step. I was married in Nov of 06. On all my tax papers I filed single. I have not yet change my name also. Is it too late to adjust my 07 tax to file as married? But if I do ,I need an ITIN number for my spouse? I am a US citizen and my spouse lives in Jamaica. What steps do I need to do to ensure I do not have any problems. I don't see too much on this topic.

Pls advise

Thanks in advice

Hi Tash,

yes if u are going to claim ur husband who is in JA u need to get a ITIN # for him, yes u can amend your taxes from 2007.

Last year I filed single (totally not thinking just b/c my husband did not live in the country) as well, I also did not claim him either, so to tell you thruth I'm not sure what problems would arise if u amend 2007 taxes to married and claim him, don't think much problem but just time. Go on the IRS site a see if u can find info on this

Hope I helped a little

Also Kimmy, I notice we are at the same position in our timeline, being approved. Congrats. Did you receive the NOA2 in the mail as yet? or that's just the email approval? I got an email approval Dec, 11th and all now I haven't receive the NOA2. I called and they said I actually have up to 30 days from the approval to get the notice.

Tash check this out another thread may help answer some of ur questions

Tax return questions

Oh Great Looking out! Thanks again.

u got it

You will have to apply for a ITIN number at the same time you file your taxes. Send the W7 form in when you send in your 2007 tax papers. Its good to file married instead of single cause you get WAAAAYYYY more right offs. Especially if your spouse doesnt make much money. If you file single you can always go back and adjust, but that could be an added pain. No need to change your name, that doesnt prove marriage, just marriage certificate. Husbands birthcertificate or passport is needed. Just google search W7 form and get all the instructions with the form. I am filing for my husband and listing him as a dependent becuase he doesn't make much in terms of US dollar, so it is much more beneficial for me to claim as "Head of Household", not married.
