hi all, .

would like to ask , whats the difference between hiring a lawyer for cr1/cr2 application or do-it-myself thing..

aside from paying extremely expensive fees to the lawyer, can they make the process faster?

hope members here can give me their ideas.

thanks a lot

It does nothing to make the process faster. It can actually slow down things. They wait in the same long line with no special treatment or powers. Just follow the instructions and you will be fine. If you get confused, come to these forums. There are tons of folks that have been through this with answers. Save yourself the grief and the money!

Stop feeding the lawyers! If we do, they should weaken enough to stop breeding. Over time, we might be able to drive them into extinction. The world will be a far better place!

Unless you have highly unusual circumstances, hiring a lawyer vs. drawing on the experiences of folks in the CR-1 forum and Phillippines forum is not only going to cost you a lot of money, it will probably make the process longer in many cases. Here people watch for up to the minute info and share it in the forums and we've all either be through the process or are currently going through it and are more than willing to share the experiences. Welcome to VJ.

We saved big $$$ and did our visa and green-card by our self. This site's guides spell out exactly what to do.

Also you are thinking correct, do the I-130 only for CR-1, and avoid the K-3, CR-1 is a tru immigrant visa which will get you the green-card upon entry, allowing immediate work authorization, K-3 cannot work until they have EAD which can take 90 days or longer to get, and K-3 get's to pay $1010 to adjust status.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

Larry,

Please save your money. I wasted money on an attorney. VJ has pertinent information to guide you through the process. There is no such thing as a dumb question. When in doubt, post your question. Using a lawyer will not expedite the process. I agree with YuandDan, go for the CR-1 Visa. Upon approval, you will not have to file any additional paperwork for two years. Good luck!

I already learned a lesson with hiring a lawyer when we filed for k1/k2 for my wife and stepson, i paid $4500 for the whole process , and soon to find out that my wife,a member of this forum too,.knows more informations and updates compared to our lawyer,..my wife has been telling me to not hire a lawyer coz this forum can help a lot...but, i didnt listen to her coz i just want to do the right thing then, which i thought hiring a lawyer WAS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

thanks again. we'll try to submit our application at the end of this month..

God bless us all.

Yes, you can save money by not having a lawyer. I did all paperwork by myself and everything went very smoothly.

I-130 Timeline with USCIS:

It took 92 days for I-130 to get approved from the filing date

NVC Process of I-130:

It took 78 days to complete the NVC process

Interview Process at The U.S. Embassy

Interview took 223 days from the I-130 filing date. Immigrant Visa was issued right after the interview

welcome larry, you have hit the motherload when it comes forums. my next door neighbor is a immigration attorney handling the more complicated cases, deportation ect . He recomends this site and i soon found out why . most of the people here know more about immigration than some attorneys will ever know. any and all questions are answered . No question that i have seen has been considered dumb. my wife and i have been to several attorneys just for consults about the best time to apply and we were not impressed. then my neighbor moves in and the fun started at a bbq. He said there is absolutely NO reason a person could not handle a straight forward case including waivers without a attorney. So just sit back ,file, and enjoy the ride. Only problem that will develope is you will get impatient with the system because you will have all the shortcuts figured out that this site has to offer and will have all the paperwork all done before it is mailed to you . Again Welcome :dance:
