Hello,

I was asked to find out about transit visas and how we're able to get one down here in Atlanta for a relative visiting us from Nigeria for three weeks and going to London from here.

Does anyone have any information about that, who we can speak to and how long it's going to take for us to get one?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. :)

A transit visa won;t work if he wants to stay for what is essentially a 3 week holiday (transit visas are usually only for a few hours/ a day or so). He will need to apply for a tourist visa. While a letter of invitation from you might help. ultimately the important thing is that he can prove strong ties to his home country.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

Transit visa allows you to stay in the US for the max of 28 days per entry. Your relative will have to apply for the Transit Visa C-1 in Nigeria if that's where he is departing from.

The procedure and requirement is pretty much the same as Tourist Visa and make sure he has everything with him during the interview including the confirmed air ticket or e-ticket, if not a reservation. If successful, he will be granted the visa on the spot but then again, it may differ from country to country on how long until he will receive the visa in hand after approval.

I applied my C-1 in Colombia and the officer only asked to see my passports (old and new), my temporary Colombian ID for foreigner and my e-ticket reservation. I was granted a one year multiple entry C-1 visa and was told that I was allowed to stay for the max of 28 days per entry.

My POE was Fort Lauderdale and I actually received a few extra questions from the immigration officer when I showed him my air tickets showing my flights from city to city and finally to LAX where I boarded my plane to leave the US two weeks later. Nonetheless, he stamped on my I-94 that I was allowed to stay for 28 days.
