Plant lantana or ivy. Fast growing, and generate green carpets.

Kudzu will also work, but it covers everything (house, fence, ground, trees--which it kills) all-too-quickly.

Learn to love them? Dandelions are pretty and so are the ones with little flowers, and clover is wonderfully soft to walk on... we used to just ignore them - our garden was survival of the fittest! But every so often I'd go around with a trowel and pull out anything that was growing too tall or too thistly or threatening to take over large swathes of lawn...

The only way to get a lawn like that is with a heavy use of chemicals. When I first had my house, I was a maniac about the dandilions and other weeds & happily sprayed everything I could find (me! Ms organic!)

Then my neighbor came by and shamed me by reminding me that the active ingrediant was the same as in Agent Orange (vietnam war defoliant) and that all the run off went down the storm drain and into the river.

Last year I ripped out all the grass and landscaped for low/no water. My water bill was insane, trying to support a lawn.

Courage!

Weed-B-Gone. You only have to spray the offensive plant, not your entire lawn. Withers the weed and then you can easily pull it up! Works great.

You can also buy a doo-dad that plucks dandelions. It's basically a pipe about a yard long with a depressable button on one end and a retractable claw on the other. I don't know what its called but I think they have them in most big-chain lawn and garden shops.

Best coverage is cloverleaf (itself a common weed, which will takeover the lawn--so doesn't need watering or fertilising); just keep its height to 1" (or whatever is the bottom setting on the mower).

I could never figure out why I should kill the cloverleaf and maintain grass at 2" (with watering AND mowing, all-too-frequently for my taste; and to top it off, need to apply toxic smelly chemicals to it four times a season).

Go to your local farm supply store and get a bottle of MHMA concentrate. It will be rather expensive but will mix with water to create a large quantity (~$25/qt). The temp has to get over 80 degrees consistently before you can use it, but it is the most effective chemical against persistent weeds and crabgrass.

MHMA will kill crabgrass and weeds and not harm other grasses at all

The key is to have super-healthy grass. If your grass has a good root base, weeds have a hard time getting through. If you could look just under the surface of your yard, you should see a carpet of roots that should be almost solid. (Think about when you see a roll of sod.) Get to the home improvement or garden store ASAP and get a big bag of grass seed. Spread it on, and concentrate on your grass. Get the weeds out at the roots whenever you can, and keep your yard watered and mowed. Once your grass is healthy and thick, the weeds won't have enough water to compete with the grass.
