Motorist banned after driving 10 mph on motorway

Reuters

By Avril Ormsby

LONDON (Reuters) - A woman banned from driving for seven days after traveling at speeds of less than 10mph on the motorway told Reuters on Friday: "that road's my nemesis." Stephanie Cole, 58, of Fishponds, Bristol, straddled the hard shoulder and inside lane as she dawdled along a stretch of the M32 near her home last August.

In the back window of the car was a sign which said: "I don't do fast, please overtake".

Cole admitted driving without reasonable consideration at North Avon Magistrates' Court on Friday and was told she would have to take another test at the end of the ban.

"I didn't intend getting onto the motorway, but all of a sudden I found myself on it and I could not get off," she told Reuters after the hearing.

"I just panicked. I hate that particular stretch of road and I avoid it normally. It is my nemesis."

Cole had been traveling from her home to a stationer's when she was arrested in her Perodua Kenari mini people-carrier.

"I thought "thank God" when I saw the blue flashing lights," she said. "I thought they could help and I asked them if they could drive me home."

Cole, who has multiple sclerosis, said she depends on her car for getting around.

"I will try and retake the test," she said.

"I will have to do my best when driving, and hope it is better than it was."

Driving slow on a motorway is more dangerous than driving fast. Why go on the motorway if you intend on going slow, there are plenty of small roads she could take and go as slow as she wanted, within reason!!!!

I'm thinking at 10mph would it be better to leave the car at home and walk? If she had something like MS and it was obviously affecting her driving the question is, is it safe for her to get behind a wheel at all?

I don't tolerate dangerous drivers and I do think that really slow drivers on 70mph roads are more dangerous than speeders.

She didn't intend getting on the motorway?

So she can't read signs either?

God help us if they let people like her keep her license.

She is the type who says she has never been in an accident but omits to say she has been the cause of many!!!!!

I know people who have mistakenly gotten on highways. They see the signs but it's often too late to change course without hitting someone around here.

I feel bad for the lady in the article, but I agree - she probably has no business driving. She'd be better off living in a more urban area with more public transport options. If I (or my wife) had that problem, we'd move to the Queens.

A bit OT but this made me laugh :jest:

Excerpt from the diary of a BMW driver

The other day I was cruising along as usual coming onto one of my motorways, which was very busy with inferior cars.

First off, I couldn't believe that the volume of traffic DIDN'T slow down for me AT ALL as I came off the slip road! I had to squeeze into a barely big enough gap between two cars in order to get onto my motorway!

The driver of the car behind me did realise his mistake though and honked an apology to me with a long blast of his horn.

Unbelievably, I had to do the same again before I could get to the BMW lane.

Anyway, once I was in the BMW lane and posing along at 110 mph enjoying the adulation that the inferior car drivers were giving me, I noticed an inferior car ahead of me which was not only in the BMW lane of my motorway, but was driving at a ridiculous 70 mph!

Naturally, I got within a foot or so of his rear bumper and flashed my headlights to remind him he shouldn't be in the BMW lane of my motorway and to get out of my way.

Of course, once he realised it was a BMW behind him, he did just that, but I could hardly believe it when he pulled straight back out behind me!

He also tried to keep up with me and when he realised I would out-run him, he put on some blue lights in his front grill and urged me to get onto the hard shoulder so that he could congratulate me on my excellent car.

Needless to say, I was eager to oblige and when we had stopped, the man gave me a piece of paper confirming what I already knew - that my car goes fast!

Apparently he wants everyone to know what a superior car I have, so I had to take my drivers licence to a police station to be sent away to have some points put on! (They're not free points either - they're £20 each and I was only allowed 3.) But the man at the police station said that because I drive a BMW, it won't be much longer before I earn the full 12 points, and then I won't even NEED a driving licence, so they will take it off me!

See, now THATS the sort of respect you get when you buy and drive a BMW!

The UK has a very good public transportation system, she should use the bus and leave the driving to the bus driver, she should be treated no different that a blind person, and not be given a license to drive.
