One-Way Car Rental for Point of Entry

Hi everyone.

I live in B.C., Canada and when I make my final trek to live with my wonderful fiancee in California I will be making an overland entry. Because of the importing fees I don't want to drive my car down to California and would like to rent a car to travel to the United States.

I don't have enough items to make a rental U-Haul worth the money, but I have too much stuff to fly. Do you have any ideas on how it is possible to rent a car in this area on a one-way rental?

The only idea I have so far, which I just came up with as I was writing this, would be to rent a U-Haul here, drive it across the border, and then exchange it for a one-way rental car once I get over.
