Hi peeps!

I was having a conversation with my mom about all the stuff I'm gonna have to truck down to the states when I move...ketchup, chocolate, salad dressing, kraft dinner, etc. etc.

My question is...

Peanut butter  .......Nick doesn't have any in his house and I've looked online and can't find anything.... -_-

What is in the peanut butter down there?

I can't live without it and if it has all sorts of ####### in it, I'll probably just end up making my own or buying the all natural stuff.

Can someone help me out and tell me what's in it, I don't care what brand.

Thanks! :)

Laura, this is what we use: http://www.peanutbutter.com/natural.asp

I've tried other so called "naturals" and this one so far tastes the best, other than my homemade. It's readily available at most supermarket chains here in the States. :)

Actually, I don't think you will have problems with peanut butter. I have found 100% natural peanut butter with nothing added as well as peanut butter with everything from High Fructose Corn Syrup to Molasses to sugar and oil. Just be prepared to read some labels. Most stores have a variety of brands available from which to choose. Right now we have Kroeger brand peanut butter and it tastes pretty good - the ingredients listed are: Roasted peanuts, sugar and less than 2% molasses, fully hydrogenated vegetable oils (rapesead, cottonseed, soybean) and salt. The jar waiting in the pantry for when the Kroeger one is used up is Great Value brand from Wal-Mart; it's ingredients list is peanuts, sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oil (rapeseed, cottonseed, soybean) salt. From what I remember that is very similar to what most store brands in Canada had. I personally prefer to 100% natural but my husband doesn't like how the oil separates so I use the one he prefers.

I found natural peanut butter at a Giant grocery store here, and I think Safeway has it as well

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

hehehehe yea - Campbells tomato soup - it doesn't taste like Campbells back home at all!. We have found some premium tomato soups with roasted peppers that are awesome, though. They come in cartons in stead of cans - and guess what? No high fructose corn syrup. They just cost more.

Cheese here is poor but I don't believe you can bring cheese across the border. What they call sharp old cheddar tastes like mild cheddar - they think it is old if it has aged 9 months! That is what I miss the most - really good old cheddar.

You're welcome Laura! I do have to admit...homemade is my favourite, but when I don't have the time the Skippy makes a great second for us. :)

Aww, if I could mail you some, I would!!!

I'm not a huge fan of old old cheese so that isn't a problem. However, I adore campbells tomato soup, so that's going on my check list!

When we make food runs over the border, hubby always buys tomato soup, Kraft dinner, beer, Cheez Wiz ... those are the things that he says taste much better from Canada (and I have to say I agree).

Bleh. Totally agree about the cheese. Unless you can find a Whole Foods market. They have good cheese. But I bring Canadian cheddar back with me all the time. It's okay. They only ask about the fruit (at the land border). Sometimes.

On this last trip I returned with:

  • 2 year old cheddar
  • Shreddies
  • side bacon (American bacon sux)
  • peameal bacon
  • bone-in ham steak for my ham and pea soup (American has WAY too much sugar  . Makes the soup taste like #######. Oh... and no bone.)
  • Maltesers, Aeros
  • herb & garlic cream cheese (No, they don't have the proper stuff here.... just some sort of whipped ####### with garlic swirls. )
  • wheat bran for my cranberry blueberry bran muffins (no, they don't have it here)
  • ground almonds (see old cookie-baking post)
  • white pepper (they have it here but it smells and tastes like stinky socks)
  • Chicken and beef liquid Bovril
  • Turkey Pepperettes
  • Proper rye bread (they just have some sort of doughy imitation here)
  • Malt bread (mmmmm. Toasted malt bread dripping with butter. Must. Remember. To ration.)
I think that was all this trip. Remind me to tell you why I don't eat peanut butter. (AKA The Great Peanut Butter Caper story.) Oh. And each time I've flown with a case of food they have always opened the case and inspected the contents. I know this because they leave a little flyer inside for my reading pleasure. But they have never removed anything. I guess it does probably look a little suspicious in the x-ray machine.

I miss certain Cdn food but rarely bring anytghing back!! About the only thing I bring back and it is for my wife is Krafts crunchy peanut butter!

Funny story, at my expense! I had a hard time finding toilet paper in the USA that I liked. So on one trip back to the usa I brought back a suitcase full of Scotts toilet paper!! I was going through Toronto and at that time if u were going to DC, you had to goto a special area and security checked every bag right in front of you!! Needless to say the security lady thought it was pretty amusing I had a big suitcase full of toilet paper!! No longer do that, I found costco's Kirkland brand to be sufficient, lol

I TOTALLY had the same problem tooooo!!!!!!! I've finally settled on (no pun intended) Charmin Ultrasoft. I think it comes with aloe or something. I just know not to buy anything with "White" on the label. Might as well use my finger. Oh wait. I did.
