Thanks everyone for the help so far, I have two more questions. One about pannyzero's birth certificate and the second about her SSN.

1) Her real birth certificate is currently in Thailand, and we would like to file all of the AOS documents as soon as possible. I was thinking her family could take it to get it to get a certified translation, scan the original, scan the translation, email them to us, and then we could print them to include with the I-485 application. Is there any reason we need to have the original birth certificate or the original translation certificate here in the US, or will copies work?

At this point, you need only a translation of her BC and a copy of her BC in Thai. She can translate it and certify the translation herself. You need the original when you go in for an interview in case they want to see the original.

Have her family scan her BC in Thai and send it to you. Then you print it out. Have her translate it. Send the translated document and a copy of her BC in Thai (that you print out) along with your AOS application.

On the translation, on the bottom of the page, she has to certify the transalted document (you can find this on the VJ's guide also). Here is how you put it:

Certification by Translator

I, HER NAME, certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and Thai languages, and that the above document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled “..........”

…………………Signed………………..

HER NAME -Print and date

2) Is there any reason or is it even possible for her to go and get a SSN before we receive EAD? She is currently here on an F-1 student visa and we had a civil ceremony last Friday. If she does qualify for a SSN, would it be in the old or new last name?

I don't know about this. I think she qualifies for SSN (but I'm not sure). A lot of people here get SSN soon after they arrived on K-1.

I don't know if she needs SSN or not when you add her name to a lot of things you have, e.g., bank account, your lease, utility bills, health insurance. If not, I would suggest you wait until she gets EAD to apply for SSN. At this point, her SS card (if she gets it now) won't be work authorized and you would have to apply for a new one when she gets her EAD. I had my SSN (not work autorized) from my last stay in the US. When I came back and married my husband, I applied for a new card with a new name, I was told to wait until I get my EAD. They couldn't do anything to change it.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks.

And this link should be helpful for her in translating her BC. There are examples of translations of Thai documents to English, including BC.

I know this is old but just and FYI for everyone on an F-1 Student Visa. F-1 Students can get jobs on campus only. In order to get a job on campus you need a SSN. Now they require that you have the job first before you can get the SSN. You will have to ask your school for a piece of paper that says you are currently attending school and that you are in good academic standing. (The best person to talk to about this is someone at the International Student office). SSA will issue a SSN but it will say "Valid for Work Only with DHS Authorization".
