Im a 60 y/o us citizen married to a 60y/o canadian lady. after being married and being together for over a year and travelling back and forth across the border for that time..on returning to the us after christmas she was denied entry and we were told that she would have to obtain a K3 visa. So now we are stuck with that. In researching the procedure I've found dozzens of immigration lawyers and and visa services whos fees range from $350 up to $2000 . It would be nice to know how you can tell who's reliable and whos not.

Do you just put your money down and take your chances or is there a way of knowing whos reliable and who will give you the help and support you need and who wont? Barbarian :s

I liked how much our lawyer charged us..... $ZERO$ our case was straight forward, and the guides on this site are excelent. We did it our selves, and had absolutely no problems.

More often than not I see people wailing about how a lawyer screwed up their case.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

I think this form is a good resource in trying to find a reliable lawyer or learning who the scoundrels are. Most people will tell you that as long as complex factors in your case such as living in the US illegally or a criminal history that most people can do it on their own.

Good luck to you both :)

There have been many VJ members that have used a lawyer to obtain their visas, and have regretted it later. The lawyers have improperly filed papers or neglected to include required documents, or did not tell their clients about interviews, etc. in time.

If you want to save yourself a lot of frustration and headaches, I would do the process yourself. Most of us here on VJ have done that and been successful.

Like previous posters have stated, just read the Guides and FAQ's sections here on VJ to find all the information you need before you get started.

Good luck and welcome to VJ.

We used a lawyer. paid $2500,plus all the filing fee costs!! We hadnt found VJ, and after my wife briefly saw a immigration official and he being incompetent, we went with a lawyer, what a WASTE of $$$$ If ur case is straight forward, no big drug charges etc, use VJ and save the $$$$$. You still have to gather up all the info and documents required (long form birth cert, police check, etc etc) the lawyer is a high priced proof checker, thats it!! There not going to make it any faster!! Take ur time fill things out correctly--ask questions here on VJ,look at example forms at the top of the page. Our lawyer was good, not worth the $2500 and she had no clue on what the interview at Mtl would be like. take ur time and look over VJ and save urself some $$$

And dont forget the cr-1 visa if ur Ontaruio and east of that, K3 goes through Mtl and ALL cr-1 go to Mtl. Mtl has been slow in handing out interviews, so u might want to consider the cr-1. If ur in Mb and east of that, K3 goes through Vancouver, and they are much faster(at this time at least--things can change) best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
