How long between receiving the K1 and the 90 day period starting?

My boyfriend and I are looking into the different options available to us and I think considering i plan to move there as and when we get married that we should get married in the USA. I understand that the journey is a lot easier that way?

My question is once he (the american citizen) applies for the K1 fiance visa, should we already have a date in mind? Does the 90 day period start as soon as the visa is receieved or as soon as i enter the USA, how long is it valid for?

To make is even more simple, should we already have everything planned wedding wise before we apply?

Thank you

The visa is valid for 6 months from when it is issued and is good for a single entry. Once entering the USA, you must get married within the 90 days.

Just like Jesse said

Once you get your visa you have 6 months to enter the states using it. Once you have entered you must be married within 90 days.

I would not set any plans in stone until you know your interview date which could be 6 to 8 months from the time you initially file your K1 Petition.

Sometimes people are approved quicker, some take longer. You can have a time of year in mind but I wouldn't set any plans.

Nick and I would like to be married this September but that all depends on when we get my interview....we are having a very small ceremony, nothing big that takes a year to book or anything.

Best of luck!!!

I agree. I wouldn't make many plans for the wedding right now because you never know if your process is going to be fast or slow. If I had to do it again, I would have done it a bit differently. Once I had my documents at the embassy, I set a date for my wedding in the US...It was about 1 month after my arrival.

If I was to do it again, I would still have had the wedding that day but I would have officially married like...the second say after my arrival and submitted documents for AOS ASAP and I would have had my work permit by now. Since I didn't do that, I'm 1 month behind and I need my work permit...like NOW...

Removal of conditions...

I would make no firm plans for a wedding that require any non-refundable deposits until after the visa is in your passport, unless you are willing to lose the deposit. The same with plane tickets. Don't buy them until you have the visa in hand unless you know the fee to change the itinerary and ar willing to risk it.

So in reality we wouldnt be able to come back to the UK to have wedding party until several months after the marriage in the US? I was hoping to have perhaps just our parents at a ceremony in America and then have a big party/blessing etc back in england for friends and family - do the "traditional" part of it all.

What would your suggestions be about this??

So what you are suggesting is to make the wedding date as soon as to my entry date to the USA as possible so that i can start the next step as soon as possible too? I can see that makes sense im just clarifying!

You look like a very happy couple!

Reverse the order. The legal marriage must occur in the US but you can have any party you want in England before you leave.

You can celebrate anywhere in the world but the actual marriage must take place in the states.

Because the Adjustment of Status process takes so long, many people get married ASAP after entry just so they can start it as fast as possible. Some even go to the court house that very day! Later on they have a formal wedding day with the whole she-bang, others choose not to. Once you get Advanced Parole (usually 90 days after filing for AOS), you can go home and visit with friends and family to celebrate the marriage.
