DETROIT - Toyota Motor Corp. overtook Ford Motor Co. to become the No. 2 automaker by U.S. sales in 2007, using new products and relentless strategy to break Ford's 75-year lock on the position.

Toyota sold 48,226 more cars and trucks than Ford, according to sales figures released Thursday. Toyota's sales were up 3 percent for the year, buoyed by new products like the Toyota Tundra pickup, which saw sales jump 57 percent.

Ford's sales fell 12 percent, ending with a whimper a year that is expected to be the worst for the auto industry since 1998 as consumers fretted over high gas prices and the economy.

Ford corporate historian Bob Kreipke said it was the first time since 1931 that Ford wasn't second behind General Motors Corp.

Ford sucks

Actually, no - Toyota sucks:

Toyota slips in reliability rating

Toyota has received a black eye in North America with Consumer Reports, a consumer-advice

publication, saying its vehicles' reliability has slipped to the point where its new models can no

longer be recommended without owners' feedback.

The magazine, published by Consumers Union, a non-profit group, previously recommended

Toyota based simply on the carmaker's track record. Normally, it requires at least a year of

reliability data.

In a sign of the closing gap in the quality of Detroit-based and foreign carmakers' vehicles,

Consumer Reports lauded Ford for "considerable improvements".

Ford's Fusion and Mercury Milan saloons and its two-wheel-drive F-150 V6 pick-up are three

of only four domestic models on the magazine's "most reliable" list this year.

By contrast, Consumer Reports assigned below-average ratings to the six-cylinder Toyota

Camry, North America's top-selling car, a four-wheel drive version of Toyota's Tundra pick-up

and the all-wheel drive version of the Lexus GS luxury saloon. These models have been

dropped from its recommended vehicles list.

Toyota's market share has grown in North America in recent years, vaulting it past Ford as

number two in sales behind General Motors.

But the lower reliability ratings are the latest in a series of setbacks. Three top Toyota

executives, including the head of its North American operations, have defected to Chrysler

and Ford in the past three months.

Furthermore, environmental groups have questioned the Japanese carmaker's "green"

credentials since it joined its Detroit rivals in opposing strict new fuel-economy standards.

In response to the Consumer Reports findings, a Toyota spokesman said that "there's always

room for improvement, but the figures speak well of our reliability".

He noted that Toyota, its luxury Lexus brand and Scion, its youth-oriented brand, made up

44 per cent of the most reliable models named.

The magazine said it might resume its practice of recommending Toyota models without

survey results "if Toyota returns to its previous record of outstanding overall reliability".

I'm surprised by the Consumer Reports...dropping the Camry. But overall, Toyota has been a favorite for the unbiased Consumer Reports. Hopefully, they will address those issues.

Ford sucks

Older Ford products are QUALITY... Their later models aren't so great, which is probably why sales are dropping.

They used to be indestructable (Toyota picups) B) Did you ever see that Top Gear episode where they tried to destroy one of the older trucks? It withstood everything, it was very funny, or at least I thought so.

Well sure, Toyota vehicles are generally ok, but while Toyota was resting on their laurels,

GM and Ford have improved their vehicles' quality and reliability to the point where

Toyota no longer gets the automatic rubber stamp of approval.

No, man - GM is #1, Toyota is #2, Ford is #3.

Of course, "GM" includes Chevy, Pontiac, GMC, Buick, Cadillac, etc and

"Ford" includes Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda, Volvo and lots of other brands.

Well, it's not Peugeot. I loved my little Peugeot...

Peugeots are illegal in the U.S.

From their web site:

"Peugeot does not manufacture vehicles that conform to current United States regulations.

For this reason it is unfortunately impossible for anyone to import a Peugeot model into the USA.

Should anybody attempt to do so, the vehicle will be blocked at the port of arrival and will not

be allowed to be operated in the USA and Canada. "
