We booked a trip for our spring break (yeah yeah, we're like 12 years old) for 4 days in Lisbon, 4 in London and 2 in Paris. Paris I think I've got covered as far as touring around as I used to live there, but we'll have two nights there and if anyone has seen some new good nightlife or something, let me know about that. I haven't been to London since I was 15 and with my parents, so I could really use some help there, and if anyone has any advice at all about Lisbon, I'd love to hear it.

When we went on our trip down the PCH in California, I made a topic like this and I got SO MANY helpful hints. Thanks in advance!

if you're in London on a Saturday do the Portobello Market it's the best. Just a short walk from the Notting Hill Gate tube station

What is it?

Bring lots of dollars.

What do you want to do in London?

 Yeah that's why we're only staying in London for 4 days and will probably stay on someone's couch...

I know Rey will want to do whatever's the most fun, and I don't mind that kind of thing at all. :) But there shouldn't be a lot of museumage, because he's not big into that. Mostly we like to walk around and be in places and kind of learn about a place's vibe, you know? We also want to see if we might like to live in London after Rey gets his US citizenship (he's a EUC), so we would like to window-shop neighborhoods.

well, then I'd say do some research about the hoods & get your A to Z out & start walking! It's impossible to look at hoods for a few years down the road I think - they are constantly changing. People are getting pushed out further into zones 3 & 4 because of costs of living.

I prefer South London myself (Battersea/Clapham) - but hubby was a North London guy (Shoreditch/Islington).

too bad she isn't into museums because most of them are free

I am! :crying: Maybe Rey and I will split up a bit...

So how do I know in London which neighborhoods are currently good to stay in? We'll probably use couchsurfing.com.

ask us! :)

Zone 4 is too far out.

The V&A is my favorite museum in the world! Well, besides the Louvre.

At Euston station in London I got a fabulous deal on a luxury hotel room within walking distance of the station. After that, the concierge helped me with everything I was interested in (dining, shopping, theatres, etc). I find city bus tours are very helpful and interesting. Here's a couple of good links: National Rail and Milesfaster London Info.

Have a great trip!!!

If I had 4 days in London and wanted to a feel of neighbourhoods like a local and hadn't been in years I would do the following:

Go to the Tate Modern and walk over the millenium bridge (brand new since you were there last) - I know you say no museums but the building is amazing

Go to Borough Market and get lunch there

Go walk around Brick Lane and Spitalfields market (if they haven't completely gutted it by now)

Go record shopping at Rough Trade off Portobello Road or Covent Garden (also Fopp in Covent Garden) or on Berwick Street in Soho

Get Time Out and found out what's happening at clubs and gigs and what not - if you are all inclined towards towards alternative/experimental music go to Rota on Saturday afternoons at Notting Hill Arts club - usually a couple of bands, cheap beer (by London standards) and FREE entrance. Great place to meet people too.

For starters, what are North South East and West London? Are there specific connotations?
