What an absolute nightmare!! I'm so sorry that Jinky in particular, since she was there for the fiasco, had to go through this! Sounds like things are clearer now, however this has to be still upsetting.

Thanks for sharing. Maybe it will help others who have thought about how to send money to the US, or are cashing a cheque, develop a different plan.

I was going to say even US Money Orders say "Not Negotiable" on them... we pay our landlord with them all the time and they all say that.

It refers to the back of the Money order which says "This receipt is your guarantee for a refund of your money order if is lost or stolen provided that you fill in the Pay To and From information on the money order in the space provided".

Sorry this is such a nightmare!!!

Looks like Western Union might have been the most direct way to do it.

I do what previous posters mention - keep a CDN bank account open (my mother deposits all funds to it in CDN funds) and do all my transfers by Custom House.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Oi so what's the update????

Can't believe this fell to page 2!!!!

One of the officers who took the initial call and was there, called me and told me that Goose called the police because he believed that Jinky was trying to pass a counterfeit check, however, he decided not to press charges, so now it's a civil matter and out of the police hands. I argued with him over the phone, saying that if he wouldn't press charges, then he can't take the check, but the officer insisted that it's now a civil matter....that I should take them to small claims if needed to get the check back. I felt defeated. I said that doesn't make sense...that a citizen has no protection from a place like that to just take a check and claim it's fraudulent. I told him there was no agreement of services...Jinky merely went in there to see how much it would cost and as soon as Goose looked at the check, he confiscated it. Once they realize it is legit, I don't want them cashing it for us and charging us some exorbitant fee because I don't want their service.

The guy is obviously an incompetent moron, but at the same time I can imagine those places see a lot of counterfeit checks. So I called the check cashing place this morning, explained what the Bank of Ireland told me (that is very much a legitimate check) and that I want the check back. She said someone would call me back, but the check was already forwarded to their corporate offices and that it may take a few days to have it sent back.

No one has called back yet and the Bank of Ireland is closed for the weekend. I have their fax number and I'm going to send them all the information along with the check cashing place's fax number and see if they can expedite the check being returned to us.

I just may have to settle this in small claims if they drag their heels. When the officers first arrived, they ordered Jinky up against the wall. She's 7 months pregnant! Job was crying.

This is probably what's gotten me down. It's just a f##ked up situation and it has drained me. :(

hubby says that someone with a name like goose sounds like he would cash a food stamp if you wanted him to

I haven't met the guy in person, but my hunch is that 'Goose' is some sort of nickname, like from Guzman.

Steven, why didn't you just pay it into Washington Mutual in the beginning? It would have taken a couple of days to clear, plus a small fee; but there would have been none of this bullcrap to deal with. I used to have a Washington Mutual account in Seattle, and they ran foreign checks through my account no problem. Same with BofA here.

It's awful what happened to Jinky; and my heart goes out to her. I hope she is OK; but reading your story here-her upsetting experience is partly your fault. Why would you have her and her young son trailing all over God's creation, having to deal with people like "Goose" over something that could have been sorted out at your branch of a well known bank? Didn't you advise Jinky what to do before hand? She is new here and I think the upsetting/humiliating/awful situation she ended up in is in a way your fault.

I hope all works out with the check and (F) to Jinky and Job. I am sincerely sorry for her.

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!
