Jinky's at a check cashing place, talking to two sheriff deputies. After trying 3 different banks, the last one telling us that the bank draft check from an Irish Bank in euro's would cost us $70 and 8 weeks to clear, they referred us to a local check cashing place and said to ask for a guy named, Goose. Jinky called me, telling me that Goose was confiscating the check because he believes it to be counterfeit! Job's crying, Jinky's upset and I called the cops because if she left there, we'd never get the money back (500 euros).

The cops are saying that they will leave the check with the check cashing place for them to verify whether the check is real or not.

What a f####g nightmare!

Whoa. What the heck kind of place tells you to ask for a guy named Goose??????

Geez, pay the fee at a BANK & wait a few weeks.

PS: I doubt any check cashing place would cash a foreign check.

I know...that's why I didn't even think about going to one. Now the check cashing place has the check and I'm wondering if once they verify it is real, that they'll give it back to us because I don't want their service!

Her sister sent her the money for her birthday and thought she'd save some money by mailing a check rather than pay Western Union, but what a bloody ordeal! WU would've only charged about $24 to wire the money.

I thought you had decided to open a bank account for it? If I deposit a foreign check - it takes about 2 weeks to clear.

Not sure why running around Phoenix (metro) trying to cash an Irish check would be a red flag...

Sounds like one hell of a scam.

"Goose is confiscating the check because he believes it to be counterfeit"

Excuse me??? Who the eff is Goose to confiscate anything?

We should all try it sometime.

"Sorry Sir, I'm confiscating this $100 bill because I believe it's counterfeit"

LOL

When they looked at the check, it had the words, 'Non-negotiable' above an amount that was slightly over the amount of the check. The clerk there said that non-negotiable means the check cannot be cashed. I figured they didn't know what the hell they were talking about and we'd try taking it to the currency exchange kiosks at the airport but they said they only deal with cash and coin.

It's written on the Bank of Ireland. I'm going to call them when they are open to see what we can do.
