if it's a coalition and there are many components, why no comments about crazy indians?

I think he's just addressing a certain someone's blind stereotype of republicans.

There's plenty of Democratic stereotyping in this thread too.

The GOP is part big business, part evangelical and part crazy pissed off white folk.

The last category is the brush the dems like to paint all repubs with.

what's with the racial overtones?

Just saying that the GOP is a coalition and that's one of its components. The component that I like is the one of fiscal conservatism but there's no denying that there's a contingent of "old timers" in the party who want to roll the clock back to the way it used to be, and that small group is mostly white. They're small in number but quite vocal.

The crazy indians are democrats. Come up to Jersey some day and I'll introduce you to them. It'll make your skin crawl, the things you'll hear.

ah i see......so crazy white folks only join the republican party, while crazy indians join the democratic party

Yes and the mainstream elements in both parties try real hard to hush them so up "mainstream iowa" doesn't hear them. But then Al Gore went and invented the Internet and it all fell apart.

Actually, I should have added that Repubs like him because he's Southern as well. Would most Republicans form an opinion based on those things? No. But a significant enough number of them UNCONSCIOUSLY find these things to be important. I thought that would be obvious to most people. (oops I'm on VJ)

he's the most liberal, but Republicans like him best because he's white and male! What a winning combination!

It can not be denied that white, male and southern has long been a winning combo in presidential politics.. from both parties. Carter and Clinton were Dems, in case anyone forgot.

Indeed.

I would like to hear another explanation of why John Edwards is the Democratic candidate Republicans say they would rather have as president while he is politically the most liberal.

How in the world would you dare to say you know what most people UNCONSCIOUSLY find to be important? Miss Cleo better look out!

Our country is young, we've come a long way in our short time. Whether there's a history of predominantly white males in office on BOTH sides of the political spectrum doesn't lend itself to assuming a racial bias.

Dunno - I'd be rather surprised if there weren't a sociological reason for that - in much the same way that there are disparities, for example, in the way that certain ethnic neighbourhoods tend to have higher levels of crime.

I would submit to you that all neighborhoods have their fair share of criminals. Certain forms of crime have lower bars of entry than others, and those tend to show up in poorer neighborhoods. It also just so happens that the crime with lower bars of entry (for example, pickpocketing, mugging, etc.) are crimes that tend to occur in public view and thus impact quality of life in a very easily-observable way. Crime with higher bars of entry (for example, white collar crime, political corruption, etc.) isn't something you can "see" when you drive through a neighborhood and therefore those neighborhoods remain "pretty".
